Sgs MEMOIRS OF PERIOD,XII. as yet got no account of the reception of my papers from Sir John Philips and the prelates, Sir Richard being out of town, and (the author) not having feen Sir John. The morrow after, finding that the treatife on the covenant, which I had committed to the Lord, was arrived fate at London, I found myfelf moved folemmnly to return him thanks for that, committing it again to him, and praying he would honour himfelf by it ; and herein the Lord was with we in a fpecial manner. Having on the Monday, Feb. 8. held the feffion, as refólved, I applied myfelf that week, as I had accefs, to prepare a letter for Dr Michaelis, wifflingtto have the fame over that week. But I was foYtraitened therein, that having finifhed the fcrolling of it not till Saturday at eleven o'clock, I had laid my account not to have that buuinefs difpatched till the beginning of the following week. But going down ftairs at the time foretold, I was furpri fed tohear of an occafion to Edinburgh on the Monday. Whereupon finding myfelf ('ore preffed, and already outwearied, I made my fupplication unto God ; the difpatched in the firft place my work for the Sabbath, and immediately thereafter ap- plied myfelf to writing that letter. After dinner I took my horfe, and fpent fome time in riding for my health, and for ftrength; at half fix went to my clofet again : and a friend hav- ing gifted me Tome bottles of white wine, I took a glàfs of it, fome time after, for the fame mutes aforefaid ; and by eleven o'clock at night had all difpatched, viz. a letter to Dr Michaelis, another to Dr Hagen, both in Latin, a third to Mr G. and other two to other perlons. Through this clofenefs of applica- tion I loft much of the night's reft, not being able to command Beep, as ufual with me in fuch cafes. But on the morrow, being the Lord's day, I had full ftrength for my work; only, heaven was mac* more tweet to me, as a reit from toil and labour. On the Monday I was obliged to vifit a fick perfon at Buccleugh. This condo& of providence was admirably tweet. The Lord tried me, and brought to me my purpofe, in his way though not in mine. Had I known fooner of the occafion to Edinburgh, I could have done no more than I was doing; but it would have rendered me more u neafy : lb it was kindly kept up from me till the due time, though human inadvertency was the means Providence made ufe of for that end. And as I defired fo I got, ftrength in hunc effecum, when I faw what lay upon me. And O what kindnefs I faw in the neceffity laid on me to ride feven miles on the Monday. I was heartily pleated to fee how myGod ordered my labour, my refisand my motions, wifhing ever to be under no other conduót. But upon the neck of this, Satan laid a train for me and I was catched, and de- filed ; but was waffled again in the Redeemer's blood. Thereafter the prefbyterial exercife and addition lying on'me, I fet myfelf as I had accefs, to Rudy the fame. And being helped through grace to trait the Lord, I was moft comfortably
