But here is a fatisfying anfwer to it : the promifes, are aJI of them made to Chrifl chiefly, even to him who pm·chafed them with his blood: and jufiice requires that, they · be performed to him : and being . performed to him, they muH needs have their effect on all his members, for whom, becaufe in themfelves unworthy, he merited them. So ·the foul may fay, .however unworthy I am; yet, ' He is worthy for whom God lhould do this.' Secondly, The promifes having ' their irfuiiediate effect on the eleCl:, are m·ade to themfelves, fecondari :.. ly, in and through Chrifi. As he hath the funda ... mental and chiefinterefi in them; fo they have a de· rived interefi in then~, through him. There \Vas from eternity a legal union between Chrifl: and them, in the covenant: whereby their debt became his, and the promifes made to him, became theirs. As, upon the one hand, ' the Lord laid on him the iniquiti.es ofus all,' Ifa. li,ii. 7. fo, on the other hand, ' Grace was given us in Chrifi Jefus, b~fore the world began,' 2 . Tim. i. 9· In time, there is a real myfiical union 'made between him and them, upon his taking pof- · feffion of them by his Spirit, and dwelli,ng in them by faith.
