' ;The promife of eternal life, to the clett, compre.. l1-ends the promife of juflification to be conferred 011 them, and .each of them, being united to Chrifi thr~' the Spirit. ·This is found, Ifa. liii. 1 I. 'By his know.. ledge fhall my righteous fervantjufiify many.' Chap• . xlv. 2). ' ln the Lord !hall all ' the feed of Ifi·aei b~ jufiified.' It is the leading promife of this period : and the effeCl: of the accompliiliment thereof, is, That the foul legallf dead under the fentence of the law~ or curfe of the broken covenant ofworks, is cauled to liv·e again accordingly, as it is written, ' (The jufi · fhal1 live by faith,' Rom. i. . 17. Arid this is the be- . ginning of that life, which .is received from Chrift by faith, and is mentioned, John v. 40. ' Ye will .not come to, me, that ye might have life.' Chap~ vi. 57. 'He that eateth me, even he, fhall1ive by me! There is a life received from Chrifi before faith,whereby one is enabled to believe, .of which we have already . fpo– ken : and there is a life received from Chrift through fttith, according to John xx. 31. 'That believing ye , might:have life through his name.' And this lafi is1 accor:ding. to the Scripture, eternal life too, chap. v. 34· ' He that heareth myword, and' believeth on him th~t fent me, bath everlafiing life, and fhall not come into condemnation; but i$ p,affed from death unto life.' The elect of God, lying under the breach of the firfi covenant, were dead in l~w, as being under the l . curfe. They could not be refio~ed to life in the eye of the law, but upon the fulfilling of the righteoufnefs of the law ; the which they not being able to do it for themfelves, Chrift. in the ·covenant undertook to do it for them: and thereupon was made the promife of their jufiification.
