of the Covt~ant. . 247 But the kingdom ofthe covenant,whereof ~e fpeak, is a ~erived, dc;legated orie, which the Mediator Chrift holds of his Father, by the tenor·of the covenant, for the admihifiration thereof, as is declared, Pf:1lm ii. 6. ' Yet have I ftt my King upon my holy hill ofZion. ' Now the·great defign of that adminifiration, is a g~th_er together finners of mankind into one body, un– der the bond of the covenant ; and to make them happy, in the enjoyment of the privlleges thereof, in grace and glory: the which body, the church~ is !he kingdom of the covenant, a kingdom .that was to be won, and railed out of the re.bel world of mank~nd ; lying in wickednefs ; and w,hereof Chrift was, ~y his Father, confiitute the a1one King and Head. In fubferviency to this kingdom, the kingdom of providence throughout the world, was alfo commit· ted to him, being made ' the Head over al! things to the churc:h, which is his -body.' Eph. i. 22, 23. he was appointed to rule, not only over his willing fub• je;Et:s, but ' in the midfi of his enemies,' Pf:1lm ex. 2 o ' The management of the wheel ofProvidence,through· out the whole world, was put into the hand ofZ'ion's · King. Into the fame hand, that the Father bath committed the government of the church, he hath alfo committed the government of the world : for thei·e is no exception ; ' the Father hath committed all judgment unto the Son,' Jo.bn v. 22.. ' AH power in heaven :md in earth / Mat. xxviii. 18. ·So he is ' Lord-oflords, and King of kings,' Rev. xvii ~ 14. and 'by him kings reign- princes rule, and no• bles, even al~ the judges of the earth,' Prov. vii~ ; 15, 16. This headlhip over the world, was neceffary to his adminifiration of the covenant, a's Head of the <::hurch ; neceffary for compaffing the ends , thereof.
