And fo certainly doth he accomplifi1 the promife of the reward of both kinds, that his people may be aifured, ' their labour is not in vain in the Lord,' ·1 Cor. xv. 58. For faithfulnefs is the girdle of his loins ; and, in difpenfing of the privileges to his people, upon the back of their duty, he doth but obferve the fiated order ofthe covenant. Nor, that tbe order of the · covenant is, in every particubr, firfi duty, then pri– vilege : nay, it is firH: privilege, next duty ; then privilege again, and fo forward, till privilege aild duty ~ome both to perfection in heaven, not . to be difiinguifhed more. W o t.o us, if it were otherwife ! Truly, i( it were otherwife, we could neither be brought into the covenant, nor kept within it in life; fqr, how fhall one at firfi believe,· rill once he is pri-' vileged with the quickning Spirit? But here lies the matter, the leading privilege bringing in du– ty, there follows further privilege on the back ofdu-- ' ty, according to the order of the covenant: and t.hefe fl1rther priviltges are the rewards we fpeak of. And the Scripture ·calls them rewards, even in refpecr of the faints; bc:caufe they are given to a working faint, on the back of his work. Howbeit, they are as far from the nature of a reward, firictly arid properly fo· called, the which on the account of one's work is of debt to him, as the leading privileges are, that produce the working ; but both the one and the other are equally the reward ~f ChrifPs ·work, in the moft flrict and proper notion ofreward.
