Inbeing in ·the Covenant ofGrace~ 275 and trembling, is very agreeable i:O the ftate ofrhefe, who have, .by faith,' received a kingdom1that cannot be moved;' but are not yet alcended into heaven: who are indeed drawn up out of the fearful depth; but are not as yet haul'd up to the top of the rock, tho~ the firong chait?- of the C10Venant is fo about them, th~t they ihall neve_r fall down again. For, in heaven, the awe and reverence of God, on that fcore, will be perfect, If.1. vi. I, ·2, 3· But it is !lavifh for faints, to fear their being cafi into hell for fin ; and fervile, to hope their obtaining heaven for their good works • . ~ And yet that llavi!h fear and fet~vile hope may creep in upon the children of the fecond covenant, and move them to duty : becaufe , their faith is weak, much ofthe old Adam remains in them, and 'ris not ~afy for them, tho' dead to the law in point ofprivi– lege, to be dead to it in point of practice. But thefe impure mixtures of fel.fifhnels in ~heir duties wi11 be humbling unto them: and they'll loath~ themfelves, for that they act not, in their obedience · with more of the free Spirit, and Son-like difpofi- . t ion. Anti their will in that cafe is accepted thro" Chrifi. 3· The Spirit of the covenant is a Spirit offympa-· thy, regulated by tke covenant. There is a commoh- · nefs, of the interefr, and thence a mutual fympathy,. among confederates. And this fympathy among the confederates of heaven, regards both the Head and the people of the covenant. (r.) Tr.cey have a native and kindly fympathy with the God :md head of the covenant. 'Tis true, his · elfentiaJ glory can never be liable to diminutio~; nor ·can his eternal refi ip himfelf, be in the leaft difiurbed; .J by whatfoever men or angels may do or fuffer : and the man Chrifi is now Beyond the reach of fufferings.
