And tht~ IS the very hinge of the fiability of the covenant of grace, according to the Scripture. Pfalm lxxxix. 28. '~y ' mercy will I keep for him for evermore, and my co– venant {hall .fl:and fafl with Him.' V er. 22. ' The enemy f11al1 not exaCt upon Him.' Or; as others read it, and I think, jufily ; ' The enemy ihall not beguile Him,' namely, as he did the firff Adam. The original phrafe is elliptical, q. d. ' The enemy !hall not beguile' (his foul, Jer. xxxvii. 9·) in him.' Before I leave this point, ·1 offer the following Inferences from it. , lnf. 1. _The covenant of r~demptioli and th~ co– venant of grace, are not two difiinc_l: covenants, ~ut ; one, and the fame ~ovemmt. I know that many di– vines do exprefs themfelves otherwife in this matter ; . and that, upon very different views, fome of which are no ways injurious to the doCtrine of free grace. But this I take to be fcripture truth, and a native con– fequent of the account given of the covenant of grace in our /rJrger· catechijm, to wit; 'That the covenant of grace was made with Chrift, as tke fecond Adam, ~nd in him, with all the 'eleCt, as his feed, Ga1. iii. 16. Now to ' Abraham and his feed were the promi- . fes made. He ·faith not~ and to feeds, . as of many ; b.ut as of one, and to thy feed, which Is Chrifi.' Ro·m. v. 15. to the end.--lfa. liii. 10, II.--' When thou !halt ,make his foul an offering for fin, he ilull fee his fe€c!, he £hall prolong his days, and the plea· f~re of the Lord iliall profper in his hand. He ihall fee of the rravail of his foul, and ihall be fatisfied, &c." - So. the covenant of redemption and the covenant of grace are but two names of one and the fame fecond cove·~ant under diffe~ent c~nfiderations.
