In their perfon he fiood 1 , making t~is covenant with his Father : in their name he aCted, firiking this ba-rgain with him as a Surety to obey the law and fatisfy jufiice. And this I !hall, in the firfl pla~e, confirm ; and then, fhall enquire how the deer were confidered in this covenant a9d federal reprefentation. Firfl, That the eleCt were the party rep'refented, or contraCl:ed and undertaken for, in the covenant of grace, appears from the fol1owing grounds. Firfl, The party with whom the covenant was made, is, in the text, called God's chofen ; as repre .. · feqting and contraCl:ing for all the chofen or eleCl:: even as the fir.fr mari was called Adam or man; as re– prefent1ng and contraCting for all mankind, in his co– venant. For as the Apofile . teacheth, Heb~ ii. u .. ' He--and they--are all one;' not only of ·one nature, but alfo of one bocly, to wit, the eleCl:ion: Chrifi is the Head E!eEI, Ifa. xlii. ' I. they the body eleCl:, Eph. v. 23. Therefore, they go under one name, princi-> p-ally qelonging to -him, and then to them by partici- · pation with him. T)ms he is alfo called Abraham's , feed, as reprefenting all the fpiritual feed ofAbraham, that is, the eleCl:, Gal. iii. 16. 'And to thy feed, which is Chrifi.' And, the Seed of the woman, as oppofed ta t~e ferpent' s feed: and under that name alfo t?e -elecr are comprehended, 'they, and they only, bemg the· party . ' •
