And there are feveral o· thcr parts of that mediation which refpeCting the pro– mifes' of the covenant, dp belong to the adminifl:rati– on thereof. · But thefe, I have now mentioned, do refpeCt the condition of the covenant, and fo belong to the making thereof, un-der which head we ihall con.. fider them in .order. I. Chriji the Kin{man·r~deemer in the Covenant. OUR Lord Jefus Chrl£1:, the fecond Adam, giving his confent to the covenant, as propofed to him by the Father, filled him Kinfi11an-redeemer in the covenant, Job xix. 25. ' I know that my Redeemer ·live.rh, and that be ihall fraud at the latter day upon the earth.' · l!nder the law, when a man was not' able to -atl: · for himfelf, to a!Tert and ufe his own right; one that was a-kin to hhn, had a right to -aCt for him, coming in his room, and fiariding up in his right. And fuch a one was called his Goel, which properly fignifies a Kinfman-redeemer. Hence that word is· fometimes rendred a Kinfman, as Numb. v. 8. ' lfthe man have no (Goel) kinjman to recompenfe the trefpafs unto! Ruth iii. I~. 'Iam thy (Goel) near kinfman: howbeit there is a (Goel) kinfman nearer than I.' Sometimes it is rendred a· Redeemer, as Prov. xxiii. I I. ' Their I (Got!) Redeemer is mighty., Ifa. xlvii . 4· As' for our (Goel) Redeemer, the Lord ofhofls is his name.' One aCting in that capacity, is called, ' -doing the kinfman's part, or redeeming,' to wit, by right of kin, Ruth iii. 13·
