The co~ venabt of grace was made with the fpiritual feed, iri Ghrifi, the fecond Adam, taking burden for them. upon - himfelf as their.furety. And without a furety it could n.ot have been . made with them. For they were a company of broken men, owing a thoufand times P,lOre than they were all worth : and their word in a new bargain for 1ife.and falvation wa.s worth nothing; there could be no regard had to it, in heaven. There . wa~ neirber trutp p6r ability left them, after the firll: covenant was broken. Behold their characrer in point of truth or v~racity, Rorn. iii. 4· ' Let God be true, and every man a liar :' and in the point of ability. chap. v. 6. 'When we were without-firength, in du<; timo Chrifi died for the ungodly.' T .he demands in this covenant were high, and quite above their a– bility tc;> anfwer : and befides, they 'themfdves were · falfe and fickle. They brake their word in the firfl: covenant, when able to have kept it; how could they be trufied in this new bargain, when their ability was gone? So there was an abfolute neceffity of a furety for them, in it, And jefus GhriH became furety for them:
