But becaule our Saviour hath laid, Vnto you it is given to knorr the Myfieries of the Kingdom, and to others it is not ; Therefore we thou Id all la- bor to underhand it. And that ye may not be mif-led herein (as divers of late have been) into Orange kind of BI4hemous fpeeches : I fhall give you rhefe Three or Four Propolitions, or DiftinCtions about it. Firft of all, Youmuff know, That though Chrift be re- ally united unto each Beleever, yet this Unition, or Union is a VA/nary aft, and not a Natural aCt, and fo ChrLI may Unite himfelf unto the foul, Co far as it pleafes hintfelf : It is not a Natural a&,but a Voluntary aft ; and being an aCt wh ereinhe is free, he may Unite himfelfunto the foul, fo faras he pleafes,and no farther.Now the Lord Jefus Chrift, hath not united himfelf Co far unto the foul ofa Beleever, that a Beleever fhould fay, I amChrift, and I am theSpi- rit : for, then a Beleever were to be Worlhipped as well as Chrift, if he were Chrift. Secondly. You mull know this, That there is a great- deal ofdifference, between joyning unto another, by way of ContaH, or Touching; and joyning unto another, by way ofCotnpafition. As for Example, The Sea and the Land, they are oyned together, they are united : but how ? not by way ofCornpofition, but by way of Contact ; the Sea touches the Land,& the Land touches the Sea: yet the Land cannot lay, I am the Sea ; nor the Sea cannot fay,l am the Land : Why ? becaule it is an Union only by Contaa,by Touching, and not by Compation, one being compoun- ded of the other. So the Union that is between Ch rift and a Beleever, it is by way of Spiritual Conta& Chriff tou- ching the foul by-his Spirit; and the foul touching Chrift by faith. I fay, it is a Unionby way of Spiritual ContaCt, and Touching ; and not by Compolition ; and therefore a Beleever cannot lay, that I am Chrift, and I am the Spirit. Thirdly.
