476 Agevelation ofthe Apocalyple. C A P.14, Ockham, Marliliu Patavintu, Iehannes de Ganduno , efÍrnoldus de villa nova,Dantes,Petract' ; and above the refit Iohn f an Eng- lift,-man, whole dodtrine was more plentifull , then that of all the refi, and it pierced deeper then theirs; yea it did take fiuh root, that it could never be rooted out fence that time. Now one Angel onely is fpoken of in this place, the Type wherofi apply tomany learned men, becaufe that the agreement of matters is more refpedled in filch myfticall foretelling of things to come, then the unity of per - fons. He flieth throuoh the midfl ofheaven becaufe the truth now at length reviving after a long fpace wherein it lay on dying, drew a great deal of earthly filth afterit as yet, with the burden whereof it was weighed down, that it could not flraightwaies fly into heaven, that is, it could not at the fit-it attain to the heavenly purity thereof; but the (hook her wings, and flack in the midít between both; fee for this what hath been faid, on Chap. S. 13. Hence it came to pallè, thatthough that Holy man had moll certain knowledge of the truth in many things, with the fwift wings whereof he foared aloft, and left the common fort ofmen far _ beneath him upon the earth , yet he was far blinded, andmuch deceived witherrour in many things, fo that he fate as yet in the loweft form of the Saints. Therefore theñrfl beginningsof the Church, when (he began to rife up as it were fromdeath again, placed this Angel in the middefl between heaven and earth, where Çlregorie the Great was fet about the time of almofi the greatefl ruine thereof,as we Paid upon Chap.8. t 3. Having the everlafling Gofpel. That is, having the dodtrine of falvation by faithonely inChrifi, even as God had ordained it by his eternal! decree. It is called Etern. 11, as ifthe Holy Ghofl wouldof purpole meet with the offence ofthofe times, when the truth that was reftored should commonly be condemned for novelty ; but he teach- eth us-that that is Eternall, ( whatfoever men prate) which flaould thine forth unto theworld, by the helpeof thefe men ; thereby alto he intimateth, that the EternallTruth was banifhed and thrufl out with mens devices from the earth before this. Let men therefore fee here how much they are deceived, who traduce that truth as if it were a new found, upfiart thing, which was extant before all worlds, and who boatt of their dreams, which the kingdom of darknefs hatched forth but as yefterday ; as if they were of moil reverend antiquity. This Angel had the Gofpel to the end that he mightpreach it to the inhabitants of the earth, that is,to the earthly Citizens of that Church,
