touching'Antichriff. 713" then out ofthe Scriptures,'ndFathers. The Argument f}ands thus; If the Pope ofRome be Antkhri fitting in the Churchof Chrift, then the Lutherans and Calvins, and as many at are firangersfrom that Church Which is under thePope, keepe Without the trueChurch ofCOO. For the Churchif can be one onclr, ar Chrig el one; but our men fay you, do(land f i fely upon it, that the Tope of Roc is Antichrig; Therefore allour men are banilbedaway from the Church., .I anfwer that the Propofition is falfe, and that it doth rely onely upon the per- verfe underftandingof the unity of the Church. For the Church is both commonly and properly fo called. That is finch a Church, as wherein piety is corrupted, the word is adulterated, the Sacraments aredepraved, that is full of fuperftition, and mens devices; retaining onely the name of Chrift, and boaftingof the name thereof, as alfo which is focalled commonly,as long as there is any part ofthefoun- dation left unfhaken. This other Chu rch,is chaft, pure, entire, clean, harkening to the voyce of Chrift in all things, and not departing from his precepts and prefcript in the leaftmanner, as far as the in- firmitie of mortal( men will fuffer it; and this Church is alwayes tie onely and true zpoufe of Chrift, howfoeverthe whorifh Church arrogate this name unto her felfe.. We have this taught us more plainly in the (even Churches, which are called the Churches. of Chrift, al-. though Sardrs had onely.a name.that flaewas alive, and the Laodi- cean Angel was neither hot ,nor cold, and therefore was ftraight- wayes to befpewed-out, unlef a he would repent; Chapter 3. i. and 16. and therefore that is not rightly attributed to the Common Oiurch, which belongs to that Church, which is properly fo called; man may be a oranger from the Church fo called properly, and yet he may be a trueCitizen of the true Church. If you can Phew, that, the Pope of Rome hath his Chaire fixed in this true Church, which bath this name given it properly, you might juftly conclude all tobe rnnagates, revolters, and moft miferablemen; but feeing you mingle together things that are disjoyned, and difagreeable, and play
