216 A Box of precious Ointment: Or, Rom. 2. z$, 2,. And as nature begins at the heart , but art at the face ; fo 'grace o beob ins at the heart, but hypocrifie at the face; at the outfide of Religion. Every man is that really that he is in- wardly. He is not a Tet which is one otstwc.rdly, , neither is that circconcilion which is ontroard in the fiefh ; hat he is a Jew which is me ingards'y ; and circstmcifidn is that of the heart, in the fpirit, and nct in the letter, whofe praife is not of men bat of God. Cer- tainly, that man that makes it his great bufinefs to watch his heart, and to keep his heart alwayes in a gracious frame, that man is a gracious man. 'Tis true, our hearts are like our watches, feldom got to go well ; and when they do go well, how hard a work is it to keep them going well ? The mod Als of our watches are not conftant ; fometimesithey go falter, and fometimes they go flower, and often they hand in need of mending. Though in thefe and many other refpeats, our hearts are like our watches, yet if we make it our gran work to keep a confrant guard upon our heart, and our main defign in this world to have air heartihrought and kept in a gracious frame, our 'fpiritual eflate is good, and we shall behappy for ever, & c. In my other Writings there are variety of fpecial evi- dences, which the Chrifban Reader (if he pleafe, and if need require) may make ufe of, in order to the further clear- ing up of his gracious eflate ; and therefore let thefe twenty fuffice at this time. And thus much for thisChapter, &c. CHAP.
