But, Fourthly, As penitential confefsion is fincere and fo 'tis diflinal and not confufed.The true penitent has his particular and fpecial bills of indictment, he knows his fins of omifsion, and his fins of commifsion ; he remembers the fins that he hath molt rejoyced and delighted in, he can't for- get the fins that have had molt of his eye, his ear,his head,his hand, his heart3the by-paths in which he has molt walked,and the tranfgrefsions by which God has been moil difhonoured, his confcience molt wounded, and his corrupt nature molt pleafed 8agratified,are always before him. An implicite con- fefsion is almoff as bad as an implicite faith ; wicked men commonly confefs their fins by whole- fale,we are all finners; but the true penitent confeffes his fins by retail. Though it eant't be denied but that in fame cafes a general confefsion may be penitent, as you fee in the Publican, God be merci,''ul to me a 'inner; yet it muff be granted, that a trae penitent can't content nor fatisfie himfelf with a general confefsion. And therefore David conieffes his particular fins of adultery and bloud-guiltinefs , and Paul particularizeth his fins of blafphemy, and perfecution, and injurioufnefs againft Saints.
