An Hypocrite§ cbe- I dience is alwayes a limited and aimed obedience ; it is either I limited to filch commands which are molt futable to hrs cafe) fafety, honour, profit, pleafure, &c. or elfe it is limited to ' the outward part of the command, and never extends it felt ro the inward'and fpiritual part of the command; as you may fee in the Scribes and Pharifees ; their obedience was, all outward, they had no regarc-rat all to the inward and fpiri- tual part of any command ; as is evident in that high charge that Chriff gives in again(} them, Mat. 5. They did not mur- der, they did not commit adultery, they had an eye to the outward part of the command ; but Chrift charges them twith unjutf and adulterous thoughts, unchaft glances, con- templative wickednefs, fpecul -ative uncieannefs, &c. they having no regard at all to the inward and fpiritual part of any command ' . common grace looks only to fome particular du- ties, but laving grace looks to all. Renewing grace comes off' to pofitives as well as negatives, it teacheth us to ceafe to do evil,and it learns us alfo to do good ; it teacheth us to deny all ungocIlinefs and worldly luft-s, and alfo to live foberly, righteoufly and godly in this prefent world. Thefe words con-i taro the film of a Chriftians duty, to live foberly towards our] felves, righteoufly towards our neighbours, and godly to- wards God, is true godlinefs indeed, and the whole duty of man. Laws : Lord, I unfeignedly defire, and really endeavour to , have an eye upon every command of thine, and to live up to every command of thine ; and it is the real grief of my, heart, and the daily burden of my foul, when I violate any of thy bleffed Laws.
