Gen. 34. 21, 22 A Box of precious 'Ointment : Or, Fourthly, There is never an Hypocrite in the world that makes God, or Chrill,or holinefs, or his doing,or receiving good in his nation, relation or generation ; his grand end, his highell end , his ultimate end of living in the world ; pleafures, pro5ts and honours are the Hypocrites all he aims at in this world ; they are his Trinity which he adores and ferves, and facrificeth himfelf unto ; an Hypocrite's ends are corrupt and felfifh. God may poffibly be at the high- er end of his work, but felf is at the further end ; for he that was never truly call out of himfelf, can have no higher end than himfelf. An ,Hypocrite is all for his own glory, he alts for himfelf, and from himfelf; fo I may have the profit, the credit, the glory, the applaufe, come of God's'glory what will ; this is the language of an unfound heart. An Hy- pocrite will feem to be very godly when he can make a gain of godlinefs, he will feem to be very holy when holinefs is the way to outward greatnefs and happinefs ; but this religi- ous wickednefs will double damn the Hypocrite at lalle Self- ends are the operative ingredients in all an Hypocrite does, felf is the chief Engine, felf is the great wheel that fets all an hypocrites wheels a going. When hypocrites take up Re- ligion, 'tis only to ferve their own turns, to bring about their own carnal ends ; they ferve not the Lord, but their own bel- lies ; they ufe Religion only as a ftream to turn about their own Mill, and the more neatly to eff.ea their own carnal pro- jeas..
