C H A P. 8. 7uflif. , by the Trnput. of ch . Right. cleared from the N. r. 9r can be alleiged againft this , except it be faid the meaning is , He tt'as made an offering or Sacrifice for fin. But this is fo far from weakening the truth concerning the Imputation of our firmes to Chrift , that it aboundantly eon fit meth it: for there was a real imputation ofthe guilt of rheifinner upon the Sacrifi s is. ex pr ff faid , Lev. 16: 2.1, 22. And Aaron shall lay both hit hands° e7 ç Y t be live goat , and confefs over him all th* iniquities of the Children.,olf 'I frael , d? all their tref pa ffes in all their firmer , putting them upon the head off' t , and the goat shall bear upon him all their iniquities unto a land not inhabited. And the people were tolay their hands on the head of the Sacri- fice , to fignifie their rolling oftheir guilt over upon the expiatory Sacrifie, Levit. I: 4. & ;: 2, 8, 13. & 4.: 4, i 5, 24, 29, 33. So that if Chrift was made fin , that is , a Sacrifice for fin (though the word iipt,cp Tice is no where in the New Teft. fo taken ) it mull needs be granted , that guilt was tranfferred upon Him, in order toHis becoming a Sacrifice for fin : jullice could not exact upon Him, if it had not been fo, He having been free of all fin and guilt, in His own perfon. E xcept. 2. Some of the moll judicious áT learned afJiflantr of the way of this Imputation , abfòlutely rejelt this equality or reciprocation of Imputation between the finnes of beleevers unto Chrift , and the Righteoufnefs of Chrifl unto them. There is not the fameforce and power of our unrighteoufnefs to make Chrifl unrigh- teous; which is of His Righteoufnefs to make beleevers righteous. Therefore el. we are not madeformallyrighteousby fuchan Imputation. Anf. We willingly grant feveral differences , befide what is mentioned : yet this agreement & correfpondency (which is all we feek ) is manifeft, That , as Chrift . who knew no fin, as to Himfelf , was made fin , or had the guilt of fin laid upon Him , and was handled by jufiice as a firmer legally : fo we , who have n4 righteoufnefs of our owne, have Chrifts Righteoufnefs imputed to us, and beflowed upon us ; and upon the account thereof are dealt with as legally righteous. We do not fpeak of Chrifts Obedience only ; but alert the Imputation of His Sufferings too. Nor do we fay,, that we are hereby made formally Righteous, if the terme formally import inherently ; but that by the Imputation thereof to us , we are accounted & looked upon by God as Righteous formally in a legal fenfe ; and as f uch are accepted of God. & juflified. Except. 3. There it not fo much , as the face or appearance , in this place of any comparifon between Chrifts being made fin for us, dt our beingmade the Righ- teoufnefs of God, in Him ; but only the latter is affirmed , as the end, confe- cquent, or effttof theformer. Anf. Though the latter be a confequent of the former; yet every word holdeth forth a comparifon, or correfpondence; Chrift made fin, & we become Righteous : Chrift made fin , or a firmer for us , and we made Righteoufnefs, or Righteous in Him: Chrift knew no fin , and yet was made fin ; & we, who were frnners and rebels , Handing in need of reconciliation (as the preceeding words evidence, & as is unde- niable) are made Righteous. Except. 4. That the weight ofthat particle, in Him, should be by the Imputa. tion of His active obedience unto us , bath neither Inflance or parellel expreffion Mz 7 in
