C H A P. S. of if. by the Mph t: of Ch.Right. cleared from the N.T. 93 in law, by Imputation , or have the guilt of fin laid upon Him, before He could be a fit Sacrifice for fin. He alleigeth. 2. To exprefr a Number of jufliffed or righteous perfons by the abfiraft terme of Righteoufnefs ,, is very agreable to the Scripture dialefi in other places , as poverty forpcor , captivity for captives. .Anf. (I) Yet no one in- fiance can be given, where the word Righteoufnefs hath this Import. (2) But how ever as was Paid, thefe juftified , or righteous perlons , mutt be righ- teous , elfe they cannot make up fuch a company ; as captivity can never fig- nify a company of men , that are not captives; nor poverty a company of per - fons , that are not poor. So that this company of righteous ones muff needs be righteous , and that in order tojuftification : & feing they have no Righ- teoufnefs of their own , for in themfelves they are ungodly they muff have a Righteoufnefs by Imputation. (3) Why should they be called the ighteou(nefr of God , according to this Interpretation ? And how is the op- polition here obferved, betwixt Chriflsbeingmadefn, o7 their being ma de the Righteoufnefs of God in Him ?But this man,by this Interpretation, tranfgref eth all lines ofCorrefpondence. Fie alleigeth 3. That addition of God imports ,that that righteoufnef orju- fli fi-cation , which beleevers obtaine by the Sacrifice of Chrift , is not only itivghteou f nets ofGodsfree donation , but of His. fpecial procztrement andcontrivementforthetm. Ant, (i) Righteoufnefs and juftification are not one &the fame, how oft fo ever?he name them as Synonymous. (2) We grant , that the -P.j hteou f- nefs & the tuftìf'cation, which Beleevers obtaine , are both Gods tree gift & Hiscontrivement: But notwithftanding hereof, yea fo much the rather, . is there a Righteoufnefs imputed to them , & the Righteoufnefs of Chrift ,. who is God, and a Righteoufnefs, which will be accepted of God , whole judgment is according to truth, as a fufficient ground, whereupon to pro- nounce Inch, as in themfelves are ungodly, to be Righteous , & fo to tu- ftifie them. He alleigeth 4. That by the ,Erammatical con f1ruffion l dependance of the latter claufe, our being made the Righteoufnefs of God in Chrift, ,upon the former , it is evident , that in the latter fuch an E ffeft muff of nece /ity be figni fled, which may anfwere that caufe , to wit , the death ofChrift for us ; dT this is delive- rance from the guilt ¿r punishment of fin, not the Imputation of His attive obedience. Anl As Chrifts death could not be feparated from His Obedience, which is thereby prefuppofed , His death being the Sacrifice of one, who is made under the law , and was obedient thereunto unto death & that in the room & head ofHis own; So the Imputation of Righteoufnefs to us should not be feparated from the Imputation of His Sufferings, both being neceffarily required unto finners, who had finned, & yet remained under the obligation of the law, in order to their acceptance with God, and Jufti- lication. He alleigeth ç. The Scriptures, when they fpeakof the Sufferings of Chrifl, as acaufe, inrefpettofjuflification, never afcribe any other of11 unto them, but only, either the Remifiion of fins, deliverance from wrath , Redemption, or-the like. :Inf. As the Scriptures making fo frequent mention of the Suffe- M 3, rings
