The end therefore here being twofold , vii. Deliverance from under the law , and receiving the Adoption of fones ; the Caufe muff have a fnAtablenefs thereunto; and fay , That this compleat Righteoufnefs , comprehending both , muft be Imputed unto us , for the ends mentioned. á. Gal. S: S. For we through the Spirit , wait for the hope of Righteoufnefs by faith. Whether we take here the hope of I.ighteou fnefs , for luflificatron , as the Æthiopic%Verfion loth , tranflattng the'words thus, and we in the Holy Spirit , and in faith hope to be ju, fli fled; to which alfo the (cope may give forre countenance; or for the Recompence of glory, which is the thing hoped for ; that which we intend, will be equally confirmed ; for if Juflification be immediatly here fpoken of, it is manifeft , that hereunto a Righteoufnefs is requifite , and that this Righteoufnefs is had by faith ; and fo is not in our (elves ; and therefore muff be the Righteoufnefs of Chrifts , unto whom faith carrieth forth the foul , '& of whom he fpoke , v,ers 4. Saying , Chrifl is be- come of none of tl unto you , who fo ever ofyou are jufli fled by the law. If glory be here immediatly intended , we may fee , that the Apoftle, to perfwade,the Galatians , not ro Peek after a Righteoufnefs by the law , tels them , what he & others did and were refolved to do ; to wit , how they ventured their whole Salvation on the truth he delivered : for they waited and looked for heaven and happinefs (Which is here called , hopei by a Metonymy ) .not by the works of the law ( for heaveA with them was not the hopeof the law, or of the works of the law) but by the Righteoufnefs of faith; t hat is , by & through that Righteoufnefs , which is by faith : & therefore it is called the hope of Righteoufnefs that is that which they hope for , through thé help of the Spirit , and expe& in & through the Righteoufnefs of Chrifl ; which Righteoufnefs is had by faith in Chrifl : & that this Righteoufnefs is none elfe but the Righteoufnefs of Chrift, the following verfe cleareth,where he faith; for in3efusChr:ß, 15e. 9. Philipp. 3: â, 9. That I may win Chrifl, d5 be found in Him, not having,mine own Rjghteoufnefs, which it of thelaw, but that which is through the faith of Chrifl, the Righteoufnefs, which is of God by faith. This place is fo clear and fu11ulthat by fpeaking much of it, we may rather darken it , than explaine ir. We fee, what was the mainething Paul defigned in oppofition to what he once intendedand foughtafrer: what he didformerlylook upon, as gaine, and was Note in the purfuite of, he now had no better account of, than of as much lofs & dung : yea hh: had no better efteern of all things befide Chrifl,. & in this judgment, he perfifled, accounting all but dung; that hemight win Chrifl , & have Him for all his gaine. And what would he make'óf Chrifl ? He would be found in Him, hid in Him, covered with Him , and united to Him. In oppofrtion to this, he defrreth not to be found in , or having on his own righteoufnefr, which isofthe laity ; thereby showing us, That it was the Righteoufnefs of Chrift , hedefredtobe clothed with ,andfound in ; & therefore addeth; but that (i. e. that Righteoufnefs ) which is through the faith of Chrifl, the liigbteoufnefswhich is of God by faith.
