;76 Mr. Goodwin's Arg. agaiuß Input. anfwered. C H A P. i 2 a Man is a beleever and yet bath not the Righteoufnefs of Chrift imputed to him, or is not jullified; as we cannot fay , a Man bath the Righteouf- nefs of Chrift imputed to hirn , and yet is not jutttfied. Nay the very Argument will conclude as well , that the Imputation of Righteoufnefs bath a more neerconnexion with juftification , than faith bath ; frwe may like - wife fay, though a man beleeve , yet without imputation , cannot be ju. Rlified. But the truth is , all fuch argueings are but the Cavils of men , fee - king to darken that, which they cannot dettroy ; & are meer fophifmes, un- befeemingChriftìans, in fuch a concerning bufinefs. Then (faith he further) faith cloth not take hold of the Righteoufnefs of Chrift Imputed; but firfl takes bold ofit, & then the Imputation followeth then a man may have the IZ,ighteori fiefs of Cbrifl upon him by faith , & yet not be juflifred by it. ant. Though faith at firlt Moth not take hold of the Righteoufnefs of Chrift, already imputed ; but of the Righteoufnefs of Chrift held forth in the Gof- pel : yet faith may leane to that Righteoufnefs imputed , and reft upon it (2) We affect no fuch Conditions , as this argument would fay are the Con- ditions underftood by our Adverfaries, that is , fuch Conditions , as are like a price , that may be , for force time, in the buyers hand , before the bargane be made; and may alfo be paid down force time before he obtaine the purchafe. We owne only fuch confequential conditions here , as arc but the means and Methods appointed of God , for fuch and fuch ends , & which have an imrraedial connexion with the end here intended. And there- fore, we neither fay , norimagine, that a man may have the Righteouf- nets ofChrift, orFaith , & yet not be juftified; for in the very moment , as was faid , that a Man aEteth true Gofpel -and fo juftifyingfaith , he hath the Righteoufnefs of Chrift imputed to him , and is juttified : Every priority in order of Nature Both not conclude alfo a priority, as to time ; far lefs can a man be fuppofed to have the Righteoufnefs of Chrift, without God's AEt of Imputation. But Finally all thefe Argueings returne upon his own head; for when he faith, that faith is Imputed for Righteoufnefs , meaning by faith our a6t of beleeving , he mutt alto fay that a man may beleeve, and yet not be juflified until] his faith be Imputed unto Righteouf- nefs, by God, whole work alone this is: and his reply to this will re- lieve us. Obj. 24. That which war Imputed to Abraham fir RZgghteoufnefs, in his ju. fli fication , is imputed to other beleevers safe. But the faith of Abraham war im- puted to him for 1ighteoufnefs. Ergo &c. And for proof of all , he referreth us to what he hath faid Chap. 2. upon Rom. 4. Anf. We shall not here antici- pat the confideration of that place, and of this Argument founded there upon ; Icing afterward we will have a fitter occafion to fpeak hereunto. 06.25. Here is his laft argument, which he largely profecuteth Chap.2 i. sag. 188. ¿5c. and it would feem , that it is here adduced againe ( for we had nonce, if not ofrner before ) that he may take occafion to vent his minda- gainíl the Imputation of Adam's fin to his pofterity. Thus he Argueth. If the RigbteoufneJs of the Law be not imputable, or derivable, in the letter andfor- atality of it, from one mans perfon to another, then cannot the gighteoufnefr ®f Chrift
