I73 Mr. Goodwin's Arg. agetinft Inapt. anfil eyed, C H A P. 12 3. He faith. The Imputablenefs of the tranfgreffion of the Lasts rather over- throweth the Imputation of the obedience of it than any wayes eflablishetb it : for the more Imputable , that is punishable , thetranJgrejfïon is , the left imput- able, that is rewardable t is the obedience of ie. Anf. This is very true, when we (peak of the fame man , as of Adam , in both : for hecould not both be a Tranfgreffour , and a Final Obferver of the Law ; and fo both obedience and Tranfgreffion could not be imputed to himfelf , Let be to any other; & the Imputation of the one did quite evacuat the other. But what maketh this rneer shift to his prefent purpofe, which is to show (if he could) that the Righteoufnefs and obedience of the Second Adam , the Lord from heaven ,is not as imputable to His Spiritual Seed & Prue , as the Sin and Tranfgreflìon of the farfl Adam, who was of the earth earthy. 1. Car. i5: 47. was impu- table to his Natural Seed. Next , he cometh to the Minor, and denieth the Imputation of Adam's fin; and this feemeth to be his maine bulinefs , wherein he complieth with the Socinians , and others: Ler us hear him, fcrfi ( faith he ) the Scripture no where affirmes either the Imputation of Adam's fin or of thePighteoufnefs of Chrifl.Anf. The contrary is fulliciently proven above; & all his reafons can- not evince what he faith. He tels us , that neither is the pbrafe , Nor manner of filch fpeaking any wayes agreable to the language of the Holy Ghofi : for 8ì1l in the Scriptures , wherefoever the word, imputing , ìs ufed , it is only applied unto or fpo&en of fomething of the fame perfons , to whom the Imputation is faid to be made; d1' never to or of any thing of another:. Anf. Though it be true , that fome things are faid to be imputed , in Scripture , unto perfons , which are, or were theirs , before the Imputation , ( though that Inftance of faiths being imputed to Abraham Rom. 4. which he adduceth Both not belong to this head, as shall be evinced in due time) whether it be good , or evil, as 2. Sam. 19: 19, Aft. 7: 6o. where this Imputation is deprecated. So 2. Chron. 24:22. Gen. 3o: 3 3. Pfal. 106! 31. Yet it is alfo true , that we read of an Imputation of Something, that did not belong to, or was not poffeffed by the perfon , before the Imputation was made ; as wlAn Paul defireth Philemon, to impute to him what Onefimutwasoweing; and that he would reckon both the debt and the in ;ury, whereof Onefimus might beguilty, upon his (core , and require itof him. Philem. vers IS: Thus do Sureties take upon themfelves what formerly was not theirs; and fo make that im- putable to themfelves , which formerly was not fo , as we fee Gen. 43: 9. cif 4V.: 3 2. and the Sureties payment or Satisfaction], according to what he vo- luntarily undertook , is according to Law and equity, imputable & to be imputed unto, or reckoned on the Score of the debtor, to the end he may be dealt with, by vertue of that imputed payment & Satisfaction , as if he himfelf had made the payment , or given the Satisfaction. And this is the very Nature & End of this Imputation not that the perfon, ro whom the Imputation is male , should be account;d one, who had that before the Im- putation was made ; but that the thing Imputed may become his , to whom it is imputed , and he thereupon be dealt with, as now an owner & poffeffor of that thing by Imputation.
