C 14 A P. I ;. Some Arg. vindicated from Mr. Baxter's excepttont, 2.t quently flail have merited all for us , by His blood & Sufferings, & that in a more ,principal manner , according to this Reafon. S. And all this ( faith he ) is God's Righteoufnefs , defigned for to , di" thus far given us by Him. Anf. But all this is not that Righteoufnefs , which God hath defigned for us , in & through Chrift, in order to our juflifica. tion; nor that Righteoufnefs , by which we become formally Righteous in Law -fenfe ; & thereupon are juflified & pronounced Righteous in the fight of God ; for this is Chrift's Surety= Righteotifne1s, imputed to us, & none elfecan be it. Laflly faith he. And the PerfeE juflice dT holiner of God is thus glorified in us, through Chrifl. And are not all thefe Pet together enough to prove , that we juftly owne all a JJ'erted by thefe Texts. Aril: It remaineth to be cleared , how the Perfect juftice & holinefs of God can be fAid to be glorified in us, through Chrift , if Chrift's Righteoufnefs & Satiffaetion be not imputed to us & accounted ours, & Chrift & we be not looked upon , as one Pe:fon in Law : for all that is wrought in us, is far from being anfwerable to the Per - feet juftice & holinefs of God , becaufe of its Imperfection. And betau.. fe Mr. Barter Both not grant the Imputing of Chrift's Surety righteoufnefs ( which is only anfwerable to the Perfect jufiice & holinefs of God ) unto us , in all that he hath here Paid , he cannot be faid to owne all , that is afferted by theft! Texts. The 3. objeft. is. If Chrift's Righteoufnefs be ours , then we are righte- ous by it , as ours ; & fo God reputeth it , but as it is. But it is ours t. by our Union with him. z. by his gift , & fo confequently by God's dmpu- ration. To this he anfwereth. t. That he bath told before , in what fenfe it is ours , & in what fenfe not. Shortly here he giveth us his mind againe, Paying. It is truely Imputed to us , or reputed , reckoned , as ours; but not in their fenfe, that clan,, afiric%I'ropriety in the fame Numerical Habiter , Aílr, Sufferings , ;Wolter , m Satiffaelion, which was in Chrift, or done by Him, as if they did become full ear of the farni. Accidents ; or as if they did by an Inflrumen- tal fecond cau fè. But it is ours , as being done by a Mediator , in Bead ofwhat we fhould have done, e?' as the Meritorious Cau fe of all our kighteoufnefì es' Bone - fites , which are freely given us for the fake thereof. An f. This is but what we heard, when he was clearing the Bate of the queftion; & there ( Chap. xi ii.} we fhewed, that his fenfe was not fatisfying : for in his judgment, as we found there is no Righteoufnefs truely ours , in order to juftification , but our Faith , which he calleth our Gofpel - righteoufnefs which by Chrift's Merites is advanced to this dignity of being the poteftative Condition of the NewCovenant, wherein Pardon & Right to life is promifed upon Con-. dition of Faith ; & fo faith is our Immediat Righteoufnefs , in order to the obtaining of thefe favoures; & Chrifl's Merites have only procured them remotely, in procuring this Covenant. But we hear no mention made by him of any Inch Imputation , as whereby Chrift's fidejuffory or Surety -righ- teoufnefs is really made over and Imputed to Beleevers, that they thereby may become formally Righteous, in the fight of God, and be juftified as Inch , & fo pardoned and have right to life, immediatly upon the account C c of this
