C x A P. t S. Some Avg. vindicated from Mr. Baxter's exceptions. t z 5 lie, that is legally Innocent, cannot be legally guilty, in fo far as he is le- gally Innocent, whether the Charge be particular for one fin, that is brought in agatinft him , or for moe , or for all. He faith 2. But if you meane, that God reputeth us to be perferlly Innocent, when we are not , becaufe that Chrifl mar fo , it is to Impute error to God. 13n f; This cannot be their meaning : for they know , that God reputeth no man to be other -wayes , than he is. B it yet it mutt be Paid , that God reputeth Beleevers , who have the Righteoufnefs of Chrift imputed to them , [nno- cent , as to the Violation of the Covenant of works , I mean , legally Inno- cent , and fo , not guilty of the charge of fin , & death upon that account , brought in againft them; for they are fo , being juflified ; & therefore there is now no condemnation to fuch R rn. 8: I. & none can lay any thing of that Nature to their Charge vers 3 3. He addeth. But He ( e. God ) dotb indeed firfl give , d?' then Impute 4 R ighteoufnefs evangelical to us, in Read of perfect Innocency , which shill as cer- tainely bring us to glory. Anf. That God doth indeed Impute , that is, give & put upon our fcore an Evangelical Righteoufnefs , that is, the Surety - Righteoufnefs of lefus Chrift , revealed in the Gofpel , in (lead of our per - fat & perfonal Innocency, which we neither had nor could attaineto, & which shall certainely bring us to glory , being t, he Meritorious Caufe thereof. But M. Barter's fenfe hereof is a manifeft Perverfion of the Go- fpel : for thus he feufeth it. And that is , He giveth us both the Renovation of His Spirit ( to Evangelical obedience ) ¿7 a Right by free gift to pardon d7 glory, for the R:ghteoufnef r of Chrsfl , that merited it , this thus_ given us , he reputeth to be an acceptablekighteoiufnefs in us. Anf.Now that this is a clear Perverfion of the Gofpel is manifeft from thefe particulars ( befide feveral otherselfe whe- re touched) (t) Hereby the Covenant of Grace ischangedirtto a Covenant of works, only with a Mitigation of the Conditions. (2) Chrift's Surety - righteoufnefs is not Imputed to us, neither as our legal Righteoufnefs, nor yet as our Evangelick- righteoufnefs ; for at molt it is only granted tobe Im- puted , as to its Effects. (3. We have no other Righteoufnefs hereby pro. perly imputed to LIS, but our own Inherent Righteoufnefs. (4) Chrift is h,:- reby made of God unto us Righteoufnefs, by being made of God Sane`tifica- tion to us. (5) Hereby the immediat ground of our Pardon & Right to Glory , is not Chrift's Surety- righteoufnefs , but our own Inherent righte- oufnefs. (6) Chrift hereby me. iced neither Pardon, nor Glory to be grant- ed , as the Immediat fruites of His merites; but He only merited the New Covenant, wherein thefe favours are offered upon new Conditions.(7)Thus Chrift is made only a far ofl Mediating perfon , procureing new and eater termes ( which yet areas Impoflble to us , till we be renewed by grace, as the old ) but no Redeemer, or Surety , fuffering and obeying in the room and Read of any. (8) Thus are we juftified by our own works of Evangelical Obedience (g) God is made hereby to repute a Right to Pardon & Glory, & our Imperfeft Evangelical Obedience , to be an acceptable Righteoufnefs, & he all of our Righteoufnefs : all which are againft the Gofpel of the Gra- ci of God , revealed to us in the Scriptures , as bath partly beets difco- vered
