270 of jufti fication as continued' CHAP: 19. meaning of this Expretíionis, shall be shown hereafter , where it shall alto be manifefted , that the Faith here faid CO be imputed , is not our ad of Faith, but Chrift , 8e his Righteoufnefs laid hold on by faith , or the obje Ì of Faith held forth in the Gofpel, & received by Faith. And for anfwere to this, I judge it tufficient to fay,. That the Apofile is manifeflly there fpeakitig of that other 'unification , which we owne , for the only Juflifica- tton , held forth in the Gofpel, whereby Remifìon of fins is had, & peace with God , through a Righteoufnefs without, & of that (unification, which taketh away all glorying, both before God &man , and wherein God is held forth to be & laid hold on by Faith as one , that juftifieth the ungodly, and of that Juflification, which is from the Accufation of the Law ; by all which & many other Particulars , obfervable in the Apofiles difcourfe the- re, it is undeniable that he is fpeaking of that other Iutlification , which weallerte. If it be laid , That all this is fufficiently imported, when Faith is made the Condition of Juftification , & we are fail robe juftified by faith I anfwer. What way Faith is the Condition of Juflificaiion , & is fo to be called , shall be feen afterward : only I fay , that what the Scripture (pea - keth of this, can give no ground for a new & diflinèt Juflification, becaufe this new Iuflification`is rather a (unification of Faith , or of the Beleever becaufe o£.his faith, &purely upon the account of his Faith ; for itisafen- tence of judgment , pronunceing the tnan to be a Beleever, becaufe he is fo ; & his faith to be right Faith , becaufe it is fo ; than any Iunification of Mtn by faith.. Not to mentione this , that together with faith , as the Con- dition, ,R epentance & New Obedience is joyned ; & then there mull be a iutiification of works, or of the man by , yea & becaufe of works , which, cannôt be imported by being 'uftified by faith, becaufe that is alwayes op- poled to Iuítification by works. Befide, that even in, mens cow ts there are not twodiftinEtfentences of the judge , required in deciding of a Contro- verfie, depending upon the clearing of a Condition; one anent the truth, of the Condition & the other anent. the thing depending upon that Condi- tion;, but the Condition being inftruEted to be performed, the one fenten- ce is given out; much leis is this requifite here , where we have to do with God, who knoweth whether the Condition. be performed, or not; and needeth not, that we inilruEt the fame againft the Accufations of Satan, or of the world in order to hisinformation, Moreover, there is but one Accufa pion here brought in againf the man,. from the Law , & from the Righteous Fudge , to wit. That he is afinner, & therefore a fon of death : & there- fore there is but one fentence requifite for as for that Accufation, that the perfon hate not performed the Condition' of the new Covenant, neither will the Law-giver, or judge, nor can the Law bring it in againft a Belee. vert and what Satan, the acculer of the ßrethren,.or what a blinde or pre- judged World , or what a mans own blinde & deceitful heart shall or can herein do, is of no confederation , in reference to a Iuflification, which is before,G.od, & in his fight. But 2. Againft this twofold 'unification. (,would fay, that all that is mentioned, concerning Gofpellunification, in Scripture, agreeth but to one 3. the very contrary thereof muff be attri- buted,.
