z 86 7u1ú ftication is -by faith. 'CHAP. a r, Chrift as Prieft , and it aneth another way upon him , as Prophet & as King: yet we would know , that in all thefe aEtings of faith, whole Chrift is laid hold upon , though moreexprelly & explicitly, in the uniting aát, where- by the foul is married unto Jefas, & thereby becometh one fpirit with him. There can be no ufe making of Chrift for any, end whatfonmever , untiil the foul be united with himfelf, and in every an of faith , whereby Chrift is made ufe of, for what ever particular mercy the Beleever would have , be it Pardon , Light Strength , Comfort , or filch like, Chrift h:mfelfis grip.. ped to, & laid hold on; for there is nofeparatingofHim & his favours: yet the Beleever , while gripping & laying hold on whole Chrift , taketh him up under that Relation , and eyeth that Office ; that molt needy anfwereth to and correfpondeth with his prefent neceflïry, and poinreth forth t4jt good , which he is now defirous of , & fo aneth faith fuitablie or pütteth . forth faith in fuitable alts: as for example , when the beleever is troubled with confcience of guilt , he runneth to Chrift , yet in a fpecial manner he goeth to him , as Prieft , & eyeth that Blood, that only can purge confcien- ces from dead works Heb. 9: 14. When he is troubled with Raging Corru- ptions, & would have them fubdued , or would have his hard Rebellious Heart made more loft & pliable to God's will , he goeth to Chrift ; yet in fpecial :manner, he eyeth Chrift as a King & aneth Faith upon him accor- dingly; So when he is troubled with Ignorance , Doubts , and Darknefs, he goeth to Chrift ; yet he eyeth him than efpecially as a Prophet & according - ly aneth Faith upon him. Yet we would know , that when the Beleever aneth thus, in this different manner , upon Chrift; whether as a Prophet, or as a Prieft , or as a'King , there is no exclufion , far lets any den? al of the other offices ; which cannot be , becaufe Chrift himfelf, & confequently whole Chrift, is alwayes He , to whom the beleever goeth , though with a mòre exprefs , explicite & fpecial application to & ulemaking of that offi- ce & work of Chrin, which molt fuiteth the beleevers prefent necefïìty. Now, though all thefe alts of faith , be alts of faving faith ; yet they are not all that an of faith which is or may be ( for diftinnions fake) called the Ju- ftifying ad of faith ; fOr this is that an of faith only , which the foul exer teth , in order to )unification , and Abfolution from the Curie of the Law. 3. This Faith is no produn of the power of Nature, accompanied with all its advantages & elevated to its highefl pitch, & to the highen mea- fure of 'accomplishments : Nature , as now corrupted & depraved , not only will not willingly complye with the defigne of Grace in the Gofpel; but it cannot, being nothing but pure enmity to the holy Way es & Counfels cf God; all its mindings are of the flesh , and all the minding of the flesh, or the carnal mind is enmity againft God ; for it is not fubfect to the Law of Cod, neither indeed can be fkam. 8: 7. Perfons , deluded by Satan, may imagine, & fuppofe with rhemfelves , that it is fo wholly in their power to beleeve, that they can exerte that Faith, at what time fo ever they will: But, howbeit out of their own mouthsfnch unbeleevers ftand convinced, &condemned, for _their not beleeving; yet the mighty power of God's Spirit
