29) 7/1flificatian is tj faith. C H A P. :I; that nothing in them , or in any other creature, can .make fatisfaction unto the jufttce of God & thereby redeem them from the Curfe of the Law , and from the wrath of God , that is lying upon them , the fenfe & apprehenfioa whereofdoth now pre(fe & pinch them fore. Which maketh them cry out, with there pricked in their hearts Ad. 2: 3 7. & 16: 3o. What shall we do to be faved? They fee they cannot keep the Law : & though they could, it would not availe , as a Compenfation & Satisfaction to the Jufticeof God , for the by- gone innumerable Tranfgreflions Jwhereof they ftand guilty. Whereby we fee , that the troubled wakened foul, in this cafe, is brought to a defpatting in himfelf. He is under the fentence , and he feeth nothing under heaven that can command Peace to his foul ; nothing within him , nor withour'hirn , betide God , that canbring him out of this Prifon , & relie- ve him from this dreadful fentence, under which he is lying, as a condem- ned Malefaffor,: And we fee , what is properly the reliefe , that he would be at , and that he only defireth : to wit , To be freed & delivered from the fentence of the Law and from the curie of God ;' & to be brought into a Pate of Favour & Reconciliation with God, that his fins may be pardoned, he may be accepted of God , as Righteous,. & fo brought into a State of Pea- . ce & Salvation. This is the.plailter, that his foul is longing for ; thisis the only remedie that can relieve him ; this is the only good that he can be fatis- fied with : all the Pleafures , Honours ,.& Riches of the world will bring no reliefe or eafe to his diftreffed foul : And when he findeth that this is not to be found in hinafelf, nor in any other Creature, he mutt look for it, elfe- where. And thl`ore (3) When the Spirit of the Lord is-carrying on this work , he , by the preaching of the Gofpel convinceth the man of the reality & truth thereof, & difcovereth the Suitabinefs , Fulnefs , Satisfactorinefs , Glory & Ex- cellency of the remedie ,. that is held forth in that Gofpel, that bath brought Iife & immortality to Light, even in the Gofpel of the grace of God, wherein is revealed , what Chrift God-man hath done & fùffered, CO fatis- fie the. juftice of God : therein is the Righteoufnefs of God revealed from faith to faith, : There he feeth , that the Father is well pleafed with him , & with the Sacrifies which he offered up for fins , Whence the poor wake- ned (inner feeth , that his cafe is not utterly defperate, & that- there is hope for him , through Jefus ; or at leaf} that it is pofftble, he may he faved from the wrath to come; &a may be of reliefe is a great reliefe: And he feeth , that if that Righteoufnefs & Satisfaction of Chrift were made over to him , or heintereffed therein, tie were well; for that would fufficiently guarde him from the wrath of God , and fecure him , as to future bleffed- nefs. Thus the Spirit, by the word, revealeth the Gofpel of Salvation to the end the wakened (inner may fee his reliefe there , & betake himfelf to the only reliefe that is held forth there. . 6. Hence we fee , that while the wakened finner is in this condition , his maìne & only work wilij be , how he maybe intereffed in than al fufficicnt Redemption, & Purchafe of Chrilt, to the end he may be partaker of the Btntfites, that flowehere from , and' fo be freed from the Rate of Sin, wrath
