r C H A P. 2 f. yuf ification is by faith. d9 t Wrath & Enmity , wherein he is now - plunged : And wheathe Gofpel cal- leth for Faith , in order to this, & he findeth , that it is not in his power ro Beleeve, but that it is the pure gift ofGod,who mutt give the new heart , & the heart of flesh , & mufl regenerat & beget him of new & focreatea new Principle of grace in his foul , to the end he may be brought to att Faith on the offered mediator & Mediation, & accept thereof, as hit; only Cure & Remedie.- 7. So that , when the Spirit worketh up the foul to beleeve , he caufeth « him fweetly acquiefce , in the way of Redemption , revealed in the Gofpel, and to count ita faithful fay ing, and worthie of all acceptation , that Chrift Jefus came into the world to fave fieners 1. Tim. t: i ç. and to comply fweetly with the defigne thereof, in all points : arad for that end to clofe with Chrift, and to accept of him upon his.offer, and particularly to reft upon him, and his Righteoufnefs , revealed in the Gofpel , as the only ground of their ho- pe & peace : This being the thing that their foul longeth after , to wit, how they shall get guilt taken away & they be clothed with a Righteoufnefs wherein they may with confidence appeare before God the Spirit of God , when working the foul up to a compliance with the remedie , held forth in they Gofpel , caufeth them accept of Chrift, as made of God unto them, Wifdom , Righteoufnefs , Sanctification & Redemption , and every fuck foul,tofay. In the Lord our Righteoufnefs, have I Righteoufnefs. In him alone will I look for Pardon , Acceptance, Reconciliation & life , & on him alone will I roll my debt , & there will I refit, in hope. 3. Therefore , this Faith, though it bring the foul unto Chrift , as the only Redeemer , and is the rnansclafping hfs armes about him , & embra- ceing him as all his Salvation & rolling all his weight upon him, yet it looketh to & in a fpecial manner , eyeth the Satisfaction , Merites & Righ- teoufnefs of Chrift; for that is it, which the man mainly now {landed] in need of ;f uftice muft be fatisfied, faith he, my fins muft be pardoned; I muff be accepted in favour with God , I muft have a Righteoufnefs wherewith my fins may be covered, and the mouth of juftice, of the Law, & of my chal- lenging confcience, may be flopped, & whereby I may have Right to life and this being held forth in the Gofpel, Faith bringeth the foul to a rating on this Righteoufnefs ofChrift, that he may be found in Chrift, not having his own Righteoufnefs, which is of the Law, but that which is through the faith of Chrift, the Righteoufnefs , which is of God by faith Phil. 3:9. This is to beleeve on Chrift ] ®b. 3: 16, 36. AEI. 16:31. & faith in his blood Isom. 3: 25. Thus the foul refugeth it Pelf from the (torme of wrath , under the wings of Chrift, and hideth itlfelf , as it were , in him from the aven- gerofblottd, the wrath of an angry God, purféing for a broken Law. And here, the Man abideth hid in Chrift, and cicaveth to him , as being glued to him and utterly unwilling to be feparat from him , or ro appear without his garment of Righteonfnefs ,. which faith', fafteneth on the foul ; and the man by faith trufteth to this way, and refteth upon it with full confidence, nothing dobbting of his faiftie thereby. 9.
