Betide that hereby, no man can win to any falide Peace, or Joy , fo long as he Iveth; for he is but Rill performing the Con- dition of his Juflification, and perfeElingit by his works ; fo that till they be at an end , the Condition of Juftification is not performed , and conic - quently no juflification : and it is the mainefcope of this mans difcourfe to prove the intereft of Gofpel- obedience (as he calleth it ) as a Condition, as well as Faith , or rather as a part or belt part of practical Faith , in the matter of Juftification. ao. Hence we may allo fee , how erroneous & dangerous that definition of faith as Evangelical, Chriftian & juftifying, is, which the mentioned Author giveth us lag. 38. to wit, Such an hearty a Pent d? confent unto God's de- claration tntheGofpelby his Son , concerning Chrifi himfelfdr his Grace d? F.4vcur towards men by him , concerning their own duty , as caufèth a man to expea from God , and to ad in a way of duty , according to the tenor of fuch a declaration , dam his own concerns in it. This upon the matter is the very iatrh of Adam , only Adam heard no word of Chrift ; & fo it is but a Law-faith , & no Gofpei- Faith. And againe more plainly by way of explication, he fait h pag, 3 9. nor is it 4 bare beleefe , that God will for Chrifl'r fake pardon d9' fave , as many as trimly repent 47 amend their lives d? become new creatures ; unle f s they fo beleeve all this as f erionfly d9' heartily to repent themfèlves of their former folly , and to return to their duty in new Evangelical obedience. Not only doth this man take away from Iuftifying & raving Faith , all that peculiar doting with Chrif }, & accepting of _him , as Redeemer ,{& all particular & f pecial eye or refpet had to his Ríghteoufnefs & Mediation ; but he maketh luftification depend on works , as well as on faith , or on works , as the integral parts of pra- ¿}ical Juflifying faith : It is true , Saving faith-, cannot but bow & incline the man, in whom it is , to all holy Obedience ; But to make thefe thus to be included in Faith , as the Condition of Jut}ification, is to give us the Soci- nian 7ufit float ion , & the Soctnman Faith , for the true orthodox juílification & faith : and if this be the Gofpel juflification , & Gofpel faith which (as Mr. Baxter thinks) this;ook will help as unto , the Socinians are better ac- quainted with the Gofpel , than the orthodox have been , or are. And to evince this ( which is all I need to do here) I shall propofe a few of their Afí'ernons concerning Faith , that the Reader may judge what harmonie is betwixt this Author & them. The &acov.
