C H A P, is, Faith it felf it not imputed. 299 nefs , how should boating be excluded , & all occafion of glorying , though not befòre God ( before whom even Ada,n though he had continued in his State of innocency unto the end , could not have gloried) yet before Men , taken away , as it is in the matter of jutltfication RZpm. 3 : 27, & 4: a. The Law of works will not exclude boa' +ing , & faith , as our work belongeth to the !Law of works : and if we were tuttified by Faith as our imputed Righteouíhefs, we should certainly have ground of glorying before Men, as well as Adam should have had , if be had hood in his integrity , & obtained the crown by his doing. 6. If Faith , as our work, were imputed to us for our Righteouft.aefs ju(tification & the reward should not be fgr grace c r debt th ( the ale exprefly affirmed]. R.pm. 4: 4, S beleeveth , in this, which he now oppofeth ; worketh ) it the reward not reckoned of grace , but of debt ; but to him that worketh not , b, t beleeveth ( be- leeving then here is oppofite to working , & therefore cannot be contìdcred , as a work of obedience in us , but as carrying us out of our felves , to leek & lay hold on the Righteoufnefs of Ch rift , without us ) on him , that jufT feth the ungodly , his Faith it counted for Righteoufnefs ; that is, the Righte- oufnefs of Chria, which Faith laith hold on , is counted for Righteouf- nefs. 7. If Faith , as our a& of obedience , were accounted our Righteoufnefs, & we were jullified upon the account of it,as our Righteoufnefs , God should not be he , who juftifieth the ungodly , as he i.s expretly ailed kom. 4: S. And the reafbn is , becaute he cannot be called an ungodly perfon , who hath a Righteoufnefs inherent in him , & which is his own, & which the Lord ac- counteth to him for a Righteoufnefs : he is not unrighteous , whom God accounteth Righteous, & he whom God accounteth Righteous , cannot be called wngodly : fo that if God account Faith to us for our Righteoufnefs, putting it up upon our feore , as our Righteoufnefs, when God jullificth us as Righteous, by vertue of our faith, or as clothed with faith, asacompleet Righteoufnefs, he cannot be Paid to lutifie fuck as are ungodly. But now, the Scripture tels us, that God is one , that juttifieth the ungodly , that is, one who bath no Righteoufnefs inherent in him, upon the account of which, the jutl & righteous God can jullify him ; but one that mutt have a Righte- oufnefs from without, Imputed to him, upon the account of which he is Juflified , and accounted Righteousin Chria, though unrighteous & ungodly in himself; our Faith cannot be Paid to be imputed to us, as our Righte- oufnefs. 8. If Faith , as our as of obedience , were imputed tous, as our Righ- teoufnefs, Paul could not fay, as he doth Rpm. 4: 6. Even as David alfò de- fcri5eth the bleff ëdnep of the man, .unto whom God imputed righteoufnefì wi.hont rrors : for then Righteoufnefs should not he imputed without works ; but a prime, fpecial, principal & comprehenftve work ( for with our Adversa- ries here, faith is in a manner all works ,or comprehendeth them , as we heard ; towards the end of the foregoing Chapter) should be imputed, as otir Righteoutnefs, .st not a Righteoutìiefs without works. 0 o 9.
