C H A P. i,1. Faith it [elf not imputed. 30 t And betide , this Righteoufnefs of God is that, whereupon Reconciliation is founded , as is manifeft , comparing verf: 19. with 11. But who will fay , thatour Reconciliation unto God is founded upon our Faith , as if that were our Peacemaker , & our Atonement , & Satisfalion ; Sc as if that were Chrift, in whom.God was reconciling the world unto himfelf. Was Chrift madefrn , that the imperfect grace of faith might be made a compleet Righ - teoufnefs & become our compleet Righteoufnefs ? 14. When the Apoftle faith Rom. 9: 31, 32. That Ifrael bath not attained to the Law of righteoufnefs, becaufethey fought it net by faith , he mutt meane a Righteoufnefs , that is diftinEt from Faith, and therefore he cannot meane Faith it fell: for if he meaned faith it felf, as our work , the words should have this fenfe , they fought notFaith by Faith , and therefore they did not attaine to Faith. Shall we impute fuch jejune & infipide expreiTóns to Paul, or rather to the Spirit of God (peaking in & by Paul 15. The fame Apofile telsus Rom. to: 3, 4. That the jewer being ignorant of God's righteoufnejs, ¿c going about to ejfablirh their own righteoufnefs , have not fubmitted themfelves unto the righteoufnefs of God : And by this Righteouf- nefs of God , he cannot meane , Faith : for their faith had been their own , & fo their own Righteoufnefs , if Faith had been R ghteoufnefs : but he muft meane the Righteoufnefs of Chrift which faith faith hold on , for he addeth , for Chrifi it the end of the Law for righteou fnefr , to every one that belee- veth : So that it is the Righteoufnefs of him , who is the end of the Law , that is that Righteoufnefs , unto which they ¿should have fubmitted them- felves by Faith & it is not Faith it felf, but a Righteoufnefs which is had from Chrift ; who is the end of the Law , & a Righteoufnefs, which is had by Faith , and which every one partaketh of that beleeveth , as the fol- lowing words show. 16. When the Apofile faith Rpm. 5t 19. by the Obedience of one shall many be made righteous , Both he meane by that obedience of one , our Faith ; & not rather the Obedience of Chrift, which is imputed , and whereby we become Righteous? As the difobedience of Adam was not fome particular after -deed of his pofterity , which was imputed to them for their difobe- dience ; but it was the particular fad of Adam , eating the forbidden fruit, -which-was imputed to all his poflerity , and whereby they were conftituted fìnners : fo this obedience of Chrift cannot be any aer of obedience in us be it Faith , or what you will-, but the aétsof Chrift obeying the Law , & im- puted to us, w hereby we become Righteous, & are conftituted Righteous in the fight of God. 17. When Paul faid Phil. 3: 9. and be found in him (i. e. Chrift ) not ha.- ving mine own rizhteouJizefs , which it of the Law, but that which it through the faith of Chrifi, the righteou fnefr , which is of God by faith, can he meane by this Righteoufnefs , which he was defirous to be found in , only Faith ? If he had meaned Faith , had not that been his own Righteoufnefs ? Is not our Faith called ourowne ? If not why faith games Chap. 2. shew me thy faith , & I will rhety thee my faith.
