C H 24, Rom. IV. Proved) not the imputation of faith. 37$ manded by the Law of God ; & the Imputation thereof is exprefly alled- ged by our adverfaries, to shoot out the Righteoufnefs of God, which is re- vealed from faith to faith. (2) To fay , that the Apoftle here only requireth faith in Chrif , and not faith in his Righteoufnefs , in order to Jollification; is either to divide Chrift & his Righteoufnefs, or to give us an Hiftorical Faith , in Read of juftifying Faith; that is fuch a faith in Chriftas is the faith of any other truth revealed in the Scriptures , fuch as the creation of the world .: And this is indeed to make a fundamental Alteration , in the Gofpe.l Covenant & co delfroy the true Nature of Ju tifying faith. (3) It is true, the Apoltle is withal' shewing what we mutt do, in order to our Ju -' ftification; but this no way impeacheth the intereft of Chrifl's Righteouf- nefs , as the formai ground of the 'unification of the ungodly; but rather' eftablisheth it : for he sheweth , that we are not now Juftified by our doing,. or working , but by the Righteoufnefs of Chrift imputed to us , & received by Faith. (4) Though God loth not require of us the performance of the Righteoufnefs of Chrifl; yet he requireth of is , that we lay hold there - upon , and be covered therewith by faith , that tinder that robe, we may appear before out ju.ige ; . for to this end , is Chrift made of God unto us Righ- teoufnefs , and is become the Lord our F1/4ighteou fnefs, I. Cor. t: 3o. Jer. 23: &- And he requireth of us,. that we renunce all our own Righteoufnefs , to this affaire , & acknowledge the Righteoufnefs of Chrift the only Righte -. oufnefs, upon which we are to be juttified , and therefore he willeth us CO fay that in the Lord have we Righteoufnefs. EJai. 4s: 24. He is pleafed to add Therefore for Paul to have Paid, that therighteoufnefs of Chrifi should be imputed <' unto, tliem, had been quite beftde his (cope. Why fo ? His telling them what. was required of them elves , maketh nothingagainft this , but doth rather çonfirme it ; for when faith is prefied upon us, it is clearly fuppofed , than the .Righteoufnefs of Chrift is Imputed , this being the peculiar work of faith , asjuftifying, to bring in& put onChrift's Righteoufnefs : and fo, Where our redemption or jollification by Chrift is mentioned, faith (though- it be not exprefly mentioned ) is tobe undeaftood , as the Mean or !nitro ment whereby the fame is applied CO us ; as allo the Redemption & Righ- teoufnefs of Ch rift is to be under flood , where Jutlification by faith is only; ewpreffed : And as fometimes we findeboth exprefly mentioned; foboth are,- moft emphatically comprehended and included , in that expreflion , now-' under confederation. Such a glorious & firme connexion is betwixt all there.' Caufes of our Jutlification , & fuch a beautiful harmonie of grace , that as they cannot be feparared , fo-the deforming ,. tnifplaceing or any way alter - ing of any one piece thereof , de troyeth the harmonie, & darke¢ìerh the be- au.ty of the whole. In the third place he argueth againft faiths being here taken Tropically or Metonytrically & to this end adduceth ihefe confiderations i. It ir not likely that the rlpoflle , in this great ¿s' weighty point , should time after time , in one place after another , without ever explaining himfel f through out the whole difpu- tation ufe filch an harsh if uncouth ex-pre/flan, or figure of (peach, as not to be fund in all bis writting bef de, nor in all the Scriptures. dnf.
