C H A P. a 5. Faith is not our Riihteoufnes. 3: . wedthe fame Force Influence & E,fi.cacv into Junih`cation, with Fah.ht whereby all the Apofllesdifputes for Faith & again, }forks, & for faith as inconfiftent with & exclufive of works , are evacuated & rendered tifelefs; So that the Apoflie hath either not fpoken to the purpofe , or hall) not fpo- ,ken truth : either of whichte fay is'blafphernie. The Apoflle argueth thus, we.are )u{lified by faith; therefore we are not ¡unified by works. This nears reafoneth on the contrary , we are juftifiedby faith therefore we are jufli. fied by works becaufeby a faith that includeth works; as if the Apofile had meaned a Faith that was dead , &'had no affinity with works. 2. Hereby he coufoundeth all thefe duties , which are required of Beleea vers, or of fuch , as are in Covenant with God , with that which is folely re- quired of them in order to theirffirfl entering in Covenant , or into a fiate of Juflification : as it one should fay , that all the marring *duties, required of fuch as were already in that marriage Bate, were conditions of entering. into the marriagtflate, 3. Hereby heconfoundeth ¡unification with Glorification, making all that Faith & fincereobedience , which is required in order to actual Salva- tion & Glorification , to be neceffary before Juffification : And thereby muff fay , that no man bath his fins pardoned , fo long as he liveth ; bind. be be fincerely obedient , he is in the way to a Pardon , & to ]uflification. He cannot fay , that by a pradlical Faith , he only meane_ th fuch a true and lively Faith , as will its due time produce thefe effects : for , as that willrot conflft with his explication of that practical Faith,fo it would crofle his who- le defigne> The juft man in the eye of this new Law , ( as he faith p. 49. ) it every one that ri'htl. beleeves, repents V' fincerely obeyer , b'ecau fe that is all that is require; of a man himfelf to hi; 3uflification ás' Salvation. Where we fee, that with him , luflificatton & Salvation go together , & have the fame condì- tions , and he that is juft mull be one , that bath thefe Conditions ; and he who hath not thefe Conditions is not jufl in the eye of that new Law ; and if he be not juft in the eye cf that new Law , his faith cannot be accounted to him for R!ghreoufnefs, nor he Juflified. 4. Tic man hereby coufoundeth the two Covenants , or giveth us a new Covenant of works, ra flead of the Covenant of Grace ; for this praEtical Faith which includeth all obedience , hath the fame place , force & effi- cacy in the new Covenant, that compleet Obedience had in the old. And this Gofpel is but the old Law of works, only with this change , that where as the old Law required Perfect Obedience to the end, in order to Juftifica- tion &Salvation; this new Covenant of works requireth Sincere Obedience to the end , in order,to Julification & Salvation : And fo thus we are Jufli- he.1 & faved as really by & upon the account of our works, as Adam would have been , if he had continued in obedience to the end; & this Faith and fincere Obedience is as really, &, to all ends & purpofes , as efleEtually and formally our RR.ighteoulnefs, as Perfect Obedience would have been the Righteoufnefs of Adam : And. thus the reward n;uft as really be reckoned to us of debt , & not of grace > as it would have been to Adam , if he had flood: And as faire a ground is-laid for us to boaft & glory ,'though not before God, Zia' ïp
