4,. as 334 Faith is not ow `Ju fti fication, C H A P. a 5; Chafed alike for all , our perfonal Righteoufnefs is that, which muff bear the glory o our inteeeft in the benefits : & the Obligation , where in we (land toChrift.:, upon that account is the fame thatothersare under who reap none of the beaefites, which we reape by our New Righteoufnefs. And here it is alto titanifeft , that Faith ( if that should be made the Gofpel- Righteoufoefs alone , without works ) in order to the jullification of a fin- ner , is not conceived to as upon Chrill , as the Lord our Righteoufnefs, that the foal may put on his Surety- righreoufnefs & thereby anfwere all chal- lenges of the broken Law : but is conceived as our Work , and as our Per- formance of the New Conditions, and as fuch is refted upon, & leaned to ; Whereby.roan, bath ground of glorying before men , rin himfeif, and not in the Loy dalone, for all have alike ground of glorying , upon that account, feing what the Lord did was common to all , and this new perfonal Righte- oufnefs maketh the difference. But it will be laid , That Chrifi's Righteoufnefs being acknowledged to he our only legal Righteoufnefs , whereby we anfwere the charge ofthe Law, theaffertingofa " Gofpel- Righteoufnefs, whereby we come to have änin- terefl in that legal Righteoufnefs, can do no prejudice. I lint Befide that this maketh two diftìnEt Righteoufnef9es, & the one a meane to obteati an- other , the one within us a price ( ex patio) for the other without us ; and all this in order to Abfolution from one charge of the Law brought in againft the finner : hereby , as to us , our perfonal Righteoufnefs is really made our legal Righteoufnefs , becaufe it is made that Righteoufnefs, whereupon this man , and not the other that wants it , is freed from the charge of the Law : for , according to tTiis way Faith is not imployed to lay hold on Chrift's E ighteoufnefs, that by prefenting that Surety- Righteoufnefs unto juffice, the foul may efcape the charge , but when the charge of violation of the Law of God is brought in againfl the finner, his only reliefe is his Go- fpel Righteoufnefs, which he prefenteth , whereupon he pleadeth for Par - don & Abfolution , by vertue ofthe new Covenant, which Chriff hash pur- chafed ; forshould he alledge the death & fatisfaífion of Chrill that should give no reliefe , becaufe that was for all alike , & thereby the New Cove- nant was purchafed where-in the Gofpel Righteoufnefs ( whether Faith al- one, or Faith & New Obedience) was fet down , as the Condition; and therefore it can Rand him in no avail; but he muff refuge, himfelf from wrath under the wings of his own Gofpel- Righteoufnefs ( for he bath no other ) and thereupon reh fecure , & be confident of his Abfolution from all that the Law could charge againft him. As, for example , if tide Princes fon should by a valuable price, given to the Prince procure new Termesand Conditions to be propofed to a company of condemned treatours lying in prifon : if any one of thefe were challenged for the old crime , & threatned with the execution of the fentence pall upon that account, it would be of no avail to him , to fay , the Princes fon bath laid down a valuable price to buy me from death , becaufe he knew, that he did that for all the reff in purchafing a New Covenant , Sc new conditions ; but the firft & fure courfe he would take, would be toprefent his performance ofthe new conditions, & fay
