34Z Hots faith atonditien, bolo not. C H A P. 27, Tern? this jut ad rem : which yet I fuppofe , he will not grant , or doth he meane by this .... But what is a Potential Right ? Is it the faui'e with a íe- mote right ? and how very far remote muff that Right be ( if it be at all) which the Reprobat have ? And is there no difference as to this Remote & Po- tentìalRight, or what way it may be called , which is oppofite to an 4Flttal Right betwixt the Reprobar & the Elea , before Faith ? It is like, Mr. Bax- ter will fay ., there is none , by reafon that the Redemption is Univerfal and for all alike, & fo that Right how ever it be called, that preceedeth the Ae }ual Right, is equally common toall , if we meane that.Potential Right, which followeth upon the Redemption. But to us , who affirme, that Chrift died only for the Elea, & that he took on their debt , & in due time made full fatisfac`tion , according to his undertaking , thefe Elea ones for whom ' Chrift engadged , in the Covenant of Redemption, have another fort f right , call it Potential, or what you v,'ill, than the Re.probat have : becau- fe Chrift hath purchafed all the bleffings , promifed in the Covenant, unto them : and he hath a Right keepéd , for them , and not for the reff : fo that a Right unto allthefe good things, being purchafed by their Lord Redeemer, & Cautioner, and left unto them as his lure legacie , in his Teftament , all fo colored that in due time, according to the methodecondefcended upon , they shall be put in poffeffion of the lame , their Right is in Chrift's purchafe, and they are put in actual Poffeffion of juffification , when they beleeve ; which Faith is alfo purchafed for them : all the benefites they shall enjoy concerning grace & glory are equally by him purchafed., & are equally. neer related unto his merites & death , as to the right , though as to the a- etual collation,. Soveraignewifdom bath appointed an Order, .& determi- ning of one,, before another, & fo bath refolved to give faith , and than Juflification &c. And though it be true , that in this cafe, what is inchn- dttione, non ell in obligatrone, as CO the at-41a' pofTeion; yet we cannot think, but the holy & Juft God , having received fatisfatì.on from the Mediator,-in behalfe of filch, for whom it was laid down , is under an obligation (as we may conceive, and fpeake) unto the Mediator, to caufe hirn fee of the travel of his foul, & to give hint' his feed , and thofe he purchafed, and in due time to call themeffectually, & work Faith in them , & then juflifie &c. Adopt them &c. & thus bellow all the benefites purchafed upon them, in the time & methode wifely determined. But if Mr. Baxter underffand by this jus atïuale, that isconliituted upon the performance of the condition , a plaine, and frmple Right unto the benefice , we can acknowledge no fuch Condition, left we render the death of Chrift void : for in him alone, have we all our Law -title & Right to all the blelfings of the Covenant, to Faith , & all that follow upon it. That we may put an end to this, we shall fira shew, in what fenfe, we cannot admit Faith tube a Condition, & then shew in what feule we do admit the denomination. . As to the fiVi we fay. 1. We cannot admit it to be a Condition , in their fenfe who will have Juffification fo to depend upon it, as on a Procuring Cade, Tome way or other meriting, at leaft ex past; or ex congruoas /arm
