We cannot admit it to be a Condition , in their fenfe, who make it firickl y a Pote fi<ative Condition ; placeing it in the power & free will of man , to beleeve or not , as he will : for as this overturneth the whole Covenant ofGrace, and exalteth proud man; fo it parreth, at lealt, the glory of Redemption betwixt Chrift & Man ; & giveth man ground to ling to the praife of his own Lord, free will ; & to fay , he hath made himfelf to.differ, & he oweth but halfe thanks , & hardly fo much , to Jefus Chrift , for all that he hath done and fuffered , in order to the purchafngof Salvation. 4. We cannot own it for a Condition in their fenfe , who make it , or it & our new obedience together , our Gofpel Righteonfnefs, & that Righ- teoufnefs which only is properly Imputed to us, & Reckoned upon our fco- re , as the Righteoufnefs, upon the account of which we are Jufti fled : for thus the nature of the Covenant of Grace is changed ; God is made to efti- mate that fora Righteoufnefs , which is no fulfilling of the Law ; & Chrift is made to have procured, that it should be fo; & that his own' Surety -Righ- teoufnefs , should no otherwayes be imputed. 5. We cannot account Faith a Condition, in their fenfe, who afcribeto ltor to it with works, the fame Place, tlfe 8c Eflicacie in the new Cove- nant , that Perfeai Obedience had in the old Covenant of Works : for this maketh the New Coenanrnnthing but a new Edition of the old; and shoo -, tethChrift , the Lord our Righteoufnefs, far away , who is & should be our immediar`eRighteoufnefs, that in him we might be found hid, & fe- cured from the dint of the Law- Curfe; and withall giveth proud man too palpable ground of boafting , contrate to the whole Contrivance of the Got.; pel- Covenant. 6. We cannot owne it for a Condition , in their fenfe, who rejeEt ir, atid difowne it for an Inftrumer..t, or an Inftrumental Meane, in our Juftifica- tion; becaufe they deny that particular and fpecial Ufe , which it bath , in our Juftification, & fo pervert its whole Gofpel - Nature : Its fpecial ufe & workin Juftification being to lay hold on the Lord Jefus, & his fide- juffarie -, Righteoufnefs, tocarry the Man out of hitnfelf, as rerlluncing his own Righ- teoufnefs, & everything that is not Chrift & his Righteoufnefs , that as poor, empty , & naked he may lay hold on, & reft upon the Surety- of the publick'perfon & Cautioner, Jefus Chrift : for thus Chrift Tt 3 &his
