C H A P. 18. Holy faith is in infirumet t. mal Righteoufnefs, upon the account of which we are Juftified. Yet notwithftanding, we need not owne it for fuch an Inftrument, or fuck an Inftrumental caufe as Philofophers largely treate of , in the Logickr & Metaphy/ickr, knowing that the Efledi' here wrought is no Natural EffeE1, brought abotit by Nam al Efficient & Inttrumental Caufes ; Only we fay , the Scripture aflirmin,, that we are julîified ßís,6, 8rwlsec; & 74-1c7 ws, giveth us ground to call Faith ( if we will ufe fuch termes , to expreffe our mind ) an lnitrumenr, Icing there e Cpreffions pointe forth , fore fpecial in - tereft & influence , that Faith bath in Juftification , & no other Influence or Caufation can be allowed to it , conforme to the Scriptures; but that, which, we exprefs.in our ordinary difcourfe , not in a (trick Philofophical fence, by anInitrument. And that fo much he rather , that hereby is pointed forth that, which is the mine ground ;í3t defigne of ufing this terme, vii. the Application of the Righteoufnef sf Chrift , which is made by Faith , as a meane or mid's laying hold upon without which we cannot be Jufiified cording to the Gofpel ; And though in thefe borrowed exprefliionsfrom Cau- res, metapbyfical accuracy be not intended, yet the true meaning & intend ment of the ufers of there termes being obvious , it is but vanity, to raite too much duff thereabout; unlefs difference about other more Principal Que., ftions, in the matterpf Juftification , enforce it ; as indeed all fuch as place the Formal Caufe or reafon of our juftification before God in our own Inhe, rent Righteoufnefs, and not in the Righteoufnefs of Chrift imputed to its & received by faith, mull of necefhty deny all intereft of faith here , as an Inftrument, or as any thing like it ; becaufe, having all their Righteoúff nefs within them , they have no ufe for Faith to lay hold -on & bring -in one from without. There things may fatisfie us , as grounds of this Denomination. I. That in juftification we are faid to be receivers, & do receive `ore., thing from the Lord ; not only the Paffive juftification itfelf expreffed by our being juftified , but of force thing. in order thereunto, as of Chrift him- fell, the Abundance of Grace & of the Gift of Righteoufnefs', the atone- ment, the word of p,omife , yea every thing that concurreth unto juftifi- cation, or accompanieth it, we are Paid to receive. 7oh. 1 :12. That the Surety- Righteournefs of Chrift, is that only Righteoufnefs upon the account of which we are juftified before God; & not any Inherent Righteoufnefs within ourfelves , bath been evinced above. 4. That this Righteoufnefs of the Surety mutt be imputed unto fuch , as are to be juftified , or reckoned upon their fcore ; hath alto been evinced. 5. That this Surety - Righteoufnefs of Chrilt muff be laid hold on by us, in order to our juftification , hath been showne ; & muff be granted by all, that acknowledge it to be the Righteoufnefs, upon the account of Which we are Juflified.
