357 C H A P. XXIX What Intereft Repentance hath in our Jufification. IN reference to the clearing of this Qieflion, about the Tnterefl of Re- pentance in Juflifcation , it will not be neceffary to (peak much of Re- pentance it felf, the premitting ofa few things will be fuf"ticient unto our purpofe. The Hebrew word , which is rendered repent , is ofa general fignification for it fignifieth to return , whether from a place , or from the diflemper of our minds, or from our former cow fes ; & fo denoteth a motion or change ofthebody from one place to another ; or of the mind from any purpofe,, or of the whole way & walk; and in fpecial , it fometime fignifieth a change of the whole man to the better , both as to his Mind , Refolution , and De, portment , & thus denoteth a mans turning unto God : And accordingly we read in the Neta T eflam. of the Prodigals coming or returning to him - felf, or to his right mind & wits ; and we heare of Repentance towards God. In the N. Teflam. there are two greek words , the one tzenu,.,Éne0404 im- porting fuch a change , as it attended with after care ; the other pene,.&v fignifying fuch a change , as denoteth after wit or after thought. Some do fo difference thefe two , as that they fay, the !all fignifieth fo to forrow for what is done , as to amend it , called by the latines Refipifcere & therefore' properly is meaned ofa good & faving Repentance , wherein the penitent returneth to his right wits , fo as to reforme & amend what bath been a- miffe; and the other denoteth properly care, anxiety & folicitude after fome- thingdone , called by the Latines pcenitere, and this maybe ufed in an evil fenfe , as denoting properly no change of minde or carriage to the better, but fimply fuch a trouble & anxiety for what isdone, as maketh them wish, it were not done , whether the thing done was good or evil. But in the NewTefl. we finde not this difference conflántly obferved ; 'for 'Am/ 201, is taken both in a good fenfe, for a good Repentance, & faving Mat. 21: 32, 29. and for a common Repentance, that is not faving. Mat 27: 3,, where mention is made of rudas repenting N<. ,,a 64 indeed &pctr,o1a that cometh therefrom, import a good & faVtng Repentance, except. Heb. I2: 17. What this wórd denoteth , when ufed of God, either affirmativly, or 1 egativly , we need not here enquire. It is more for our purpote to confi- der, that Repentance may be taken in a threefold fenfe , I.ttfor a common work of legal forrow through conviElion of hazard , becaufe of fin , where- by the man may rew , be grieved, & be forrowful for what he hath done, and wish he had not done it , as7udas repented of his wickednefs. This may be , and yet not be attended with Pardon of fins : And, as to Inch, in whom the Lord purpofeth to carry on the work of Congition, & Humiliation un- X x 2 " till.
