358 Repentance no Condition of 7ttffificatton. C ii A P. 29; till it come tò real Converfion , and an Lluion with Chrift though it may be called a conditio fine qua non of Jollification & Pardon , in fuch , in regaird that afually, if not alwayes , the Lord premitteth forne thing of this , as to fome fenfible meafure , or other , unto his more gracious workings ; yet this Common Repentance hath no proper interefl in lultifi,:ation & cannot be called a Condition thereof, far lefs a Caufe , feing, in is felt it hath no cer- tain connexion with jollification , & though it be an antecedent in the jufti- fled , yet it may be , and often is,. where no juftificatitin followeth being in many nothing but the forrow of the world , that worketh death 2. Cur. 7 :Z0. But 2. There is a Repentance , that is only peculiar unto Inch , as are al- ready-juítified & Pardoned, following upon & flowing from the fenfe and intimation of Pardon expreffed by' Self-abhorring , Self- lothing, Melting of heart, and Tendernefs & the like. So E. ek. 16: 63. That thoumayeff remember b.' be confounded , d never open thy mouth any more , becaufe of thy sha- me 3. when I am pacified toward theed ?c. So E..e36- 25,26,27, zS. comp, with vol. 31: See allo ter. 31: 19, 20. Neither can this be called or ac- counteda Condition of Juftification, & Remiflìon, becaufe it manifeflly follow.eth not only Juftification , & Remiflìon, itfelf, but alto the fenfe and intimation thereof; & therefore cannot go before -it. But 3. The greateft difficulty is anent that work of Repentance, which is a laving work of the Spirit going a- longtwith Faith arifeing from the fenfe of fin committed , and the apprehenhon of the mercy of God in Chrift, caufing fpiritual & kindly griefe, farrow and indignation attherr-felves and- their finful way es ; with an hatred of fin & a fixed purpofe to forfake it , and to turn to the Lord & this is frequently mentioned in the Scriptures. Now this Repentance may be conudered two wages, i'rfi as it is in thefe , in whom the Lord is working a work of Converfion , & whoa; He is tranflating out of dtarknefs into the Kingdom of his dear Son , and Secondly as it is in fuch,. as are already brought in to a juflified flare, after new fins committed. As to iris laff, we will have a fit occafion to enquire afterward , how or what way it is required in reference to Remitllon & Pardon of after -fins. The firff falleth now under confideration becaufe we are fpeaking of Juftilcation, which holdeth forth a change of fare, as was formerly explained. That we may therefore proceed the more dtflin&ly in this Inquifition , we mutt fiat take notice of the feveral fences of the word , or of the ter - mes equipollent in Scripture ; and fee what is properly denoted there- by. And i. Sometime it denoteth molt gr iefe, forrow , or that which is called contrition , or that part of Repentance, as Luk. ip: 33. where it is explai- ned by fitting in fackcloth ashes. ter. 8:6. - No man repented him of his wic- &ednefr, Paying what I done. Thus it may an be taken 2. Cor. 11 :21. - & that I hill bewail many which have finned already, d,r have not Repented of the uncleanefse fornication 4.9' lafcivioufnefs, which they have committed. Here, 1 fay , it may be looked upon as moftly denoting this part of Repentance; though not as excluding, thcother parts. 2. Some
