160 Repentance no Condition of 7uffifzc4tton. C H A P. 29. pentance. So Mark. 2: 17. Luk. 5: 3 2. as likewife of that paflage Luk. 15: 7, 10- joy in heaven, over one perfon , that repenteth : for this is Chrift's laving of the man, that was loft Mat. i8: 1 r. Luk. 15: 4. & 19. zo.,Seealfo Mat. II: 2o. Ad. 2: 3 S. & II: i S.,& 26: 18. & 20. compared together. 7. Sometime it deitoteth a recovery from force meafure of defection , in- to which perfons are backfliden, as Revel. 2: 5. Remember therefore, from when- ce thou art fallen , d7 Rpent, dT dothy firfl works. So Ch. 3: 3. Remember shere- fure, how thou .hall received dT heard, ds' .hold fafl, & Repent. 8. Sometime it is diffinguished from works of Obedience , that follow upon it & flow from it ; as Mat. 3 : S. bring forth fruits meet for Repentance, that is fruits fuiting or answerable unto a Chrittian Elate, or a (late of belee- ving in Chríft, which before we faw was denoted by John's Baptifme. So Luk. 3: 8. & 4tí. 26: to. 9. Sometime it includeth all , that is required,, in order to Salvation, upon mans part , as z Pet. 3: 9 not willing tl..iat any should poi. h , but that all should come to Repenta nce. So that Repentance includeth all , that is requifite to efcape perishing. So Luk. 13: 3, 5.- except ye Repent ye shall all liketrife perish. So alto AEI. 5: 31.- to give Repentance to ifrael, dT Remiffion of fins; where, as Remifïìon of fins may comprehend all the fpiritual favours and privileges, which Chrifl befloweth , fo Repentance may include all the gra- pes & blefl'ings , which he beftoweth , in order to the actual participating of thefe privileges. Thus we may underfland it dtt.17: 30. but now comman- deth all men every whereto Repent , that is , by the preached Gofpel, whey- . ever it cometh , commandeth all men to relinquish their courfes of vanity & to embrace the Gofpel of Salvation , & to walk accordingly. So Luk.24: 47. And that Repentance d7 Remiflion of fins should be preached in hisname among all nations : which is the short fummeof the Apoftles Commifïìon , to wit, to exhort to all Chriftian duties, imported by Repentance; & hold forth all Gofpel privileges , as an encouragmen.t thereunto, included in Remif- lion of fins. Havingpremitted thefe things; in order to the clearing of the queflion, we wouldknow further. 1. That theQueftion is not, whether the dotrine of Papif4s about Re- pentance in order to Juftification , be to be owned , in whole , or in part ? for none now appeareth in the direct owning of their Afertions who com- monly are utterly ignorant of true Juftification , as different from Sanctifi- cation , as may fufiiciently appeare by the very naming of their pofitions for (i) They look upon Repentance as having force & efficacy to expell fin , as light bath to expel' darknefs , taking Remißïon to be a deflroying of the very Ming of fin, & expelling of Corruption by contrary gracious Qialities, & inherent Holinefs, of which they make Repentance a part. (z) They make Repentanceconcurre, asa material caufe dffpofing the foul for receivinga gracious Quality , for the expelling of fin. (3) They make Repentance to obtain pardon by way of merite, and (4)-by way of Satisfaction. Not to mention (5) their Sacrament of Pennance. All which the Reader will finde not only rejedted , but alto shortly & folidly confuted by worthy & judicious Mr. Durham
