Nothing , that preceedeth faith , no motions or workings of the Law , no legal Repentance , & the like have any infallible connexion with jutfificarion;. nor are they any congruous difpofition thereunto, or a Con- dition thereof, there being no promrfe made that all fuch, as are con vin- ced & awakened , & have force legal terrours & works of the Law upon their Spirites , fhall certainely be juftified; & experience proving, that feveral , who have had deep convictions & Humiliations , have , with the dog , returned to their vomite , & become afterward worfe than ever, Both alto confirme this. So that , after the deepe(t legal Humiliations & works of Terrour & outward Changes, & the like Effeisofthe Law (though when they are wrought by the Lord , intending & bringing about the Ele finner's Converf on & juftification, they have this kindly work. upon the heart , to caufe the Soul more readily & willingly litten to the offers of Sal- vation & Mercy, in the Gofpel ; & to fubmit to the termes & Method, which God bath in His great wisdom & mercy , condefcended unto , as to the adual Conferring &beflowingof the ble(lìngs, purchafedby Chrift,. for His own chufen ones) juflification is an Aét purely of God'sfree Grace, undeferved of them , on any account; & an aft of His meer mercy & Love. So that they are juftified freely by His grace, through the Redemption, that is in Chrift Rom. 3: 24. V. Unto this juftification, their good Works are not required, upon what fomever account : for good works mutt follow juftification, & not preceed ir. They mutt be firfl accepted through Chrift , before their works of holinefs can be accepted. The whole Gofpel doth molt plainely exclude works of the Law , under whatfoever Notion, Qualification, or Re- ffrisrtion , as we manifefted above , & (hall more manifeft hereafter : Yea, all works, upon what fomever account, are excluded, as oppofite to in- flification by faith , through Jefus Chrift. The man , who had no more to fay, but God be merciful tome a firmer, went home juftified when he, who Paid, God, I thank thee, I am not as other men, nor as this Publican, `c. did mifs that Privilege. Paul bath fo diretly & plentifully proved , that no man is juftified byworks, that we need fay no more of it; and therefore, in this matter ofjuftification, man hath no ground of boafling , but muff glory in the Lord alone. As without a Righteoufnefs no man can be juftified before God, becaufe His judgment is alwayes according to truth , & He will pronunce no man Righteous, who is not fo, or who hath no Righteoufnefs: And as uo ,. t
