Repentance no Condition of 7uflification, 367 truely penitent ) is juf ified, *On this account, that where ever there is true Repentance , there is alto true Faith : But as the change of the womans mind is not formally the making upofa marriage Covenant ; So neither is Repentance thar,which formally conflitures a man a Covenanter withChritl, and a - Jutlified perfon, only Faith doth this ;. as the womans confent maketh up the marriage - Relation. 6. It Repentance bath the fame intereft in Juflification with Faith ; then as our Adverfaries fay , that Faith is imputed to us as our Gofpel Righte- oufnefs;- fo mull they fay , that our Repentance is imputed to us for Rtgh t oufnefs. But , betide the reafons , whereby we proved above, that Faith wts not imputed to us , as our Gofpel- Righteoufnefs , which will allo ferve here, rnutatis ,nutandis , we may adde this, that there is nothing in Scri- pture giving the leaft countenance hereunto, even as to words or expref- fions. 7. If Repentance have fuch an intereft in juftification ; as Faith bath, then this mull either be true_ of Repentance as begun , or as perfeEted ( L meane as to p rts) But of neither it can be true ; not of hegen Repentance , for queltionlefs there are forne beginnings of Repentance before Faith ; (_ to -. king Repentance largly , as it is here taken , ) as the womans change of her minde from other Suitors , is before her clofeing a Marriage Covenant wi,h this man & then it would follow , that a man were Jutlified be fire Faith ; which 1 fuppofe will not be Paid. Car. 7: t r. all which mutt follow Faith ; And repenting Ephraim 3er. 11: 19. Paid, after I was turned, I repented ; & after I was inßru El`ed, t fmote upon my thigh: : i was ashamed, yea, even conf ended dfc. This being inftruEled , & being turned includeth Faith ; & the r;:fi, that followed upon it, are expretïions of Repentance : and hence it would follow , ifonly compleeted Repentance be that Repentance, that hash the intereft in juftification that Faith bath , a man cannot be (aid to be juflified upon his beleeving, no not until1 Repentance be brought to this per fey` lion ; And then Faith cannot be the confenting a , whereupon the bar- gane is clofed. . 8. Repentance can bring nothing in., that can flay or prove a fupport. unto at awakened foul, purfued with the fenfe of wrath for the breach. of the Law; nor can it prefenr any thing unto God ,'as a ground , whereupon- to be deliverd from guilt & wrath , as Faith can do & doth , by laying hole on Chrill & his Righteoufnefs, an only fufficient ground , whereupon the poor foul can have hope , and with confidence can expect ,Abfolution : The refore itEañnnt have the fame intereft, in juftification. The antecedent is clear , & undeniable, & the Confequence is alto manifeft ; becaufe this in- tereft in the matter of juftification mutt be eftima.te according to the ground of Hope, that is yeelded thereby unto the poor vexed & toffed foul , & the ground of Confidence that is had thereby of Acceptance of God. 9. To fay, that Repentance bath the fame intereft in juftification, that Y Y 3 Faith.
