371 Repentance no Condition of yuftification. C H A P. 29 whether it bath the fame Place , Office & Influence in Jitftification & Par- don , that Faith hath Obj.6. It may be , tome will f,irther objetl Luk. 13: 3, 5- except ye repent, ye shalt allli(euitfe perish:And this likely was the paffage, which Mr. Baxter cited in the firft place , the printer putting verf. 35, for 3. 5. through a miflake. But I Anf. This place only proveth, what is not denied , to wit. That Repen- tance is neceflarily required of fuch , as would be faved : And if hence it be inferred , that therefore not only its pretence , but its inrereft is the fame with Faiths , in juflification ; the Intereft of good works & of all comman- ded duties , may be hence inferred to be the fame with Faiths , in juftifi cation, becaufe thefe are as neceffary , in order to Salvation as is Repen- tance. Obj. 7. Prov. 2.S: 13. He that covereth his fin, shall not projper ; but who fo con - fefeth dT forfaketh them, shall finde mercy. Anf. (1) If forfaking of fin be here taken ¡trickly for Repentance, & if this place be urged pertinently to the point now in hand , Confeflìon of fin will be made to have the fame influen- ce, & will be made more neceffary , than Faith it felf, Which is not here exprefly named. ( z) Finding mercy is not ftrickl y to be underflood of Juflifi- cation, or of meer Pardon , but.is to be taken more largly for Felicity here & hereafter, as being oppofed to a not proJperini : And fo hence can only be inferred the neceflìty of the pretence of confeffing & forfaking of fin, in fuch as would finde grace & mercy in the eyes of the Lord , & would pro - fperin all their waves. Obj. S. Chrift is Pent, to preach good tidings to the meek the broken hearted , the mourners , & to fuch as are under the Spirit of heavinefsEfai. 61: 1, z, 3. Anf. This place indeed proveth , that Chrift was annointed to preach good tidings utrto the meek, to binde up the brokenhearted, to comfort all that mourne , to appoint & give unto them beauty for ashes, the oile of joy for mourning & the garment of praife for the fpirit of heavinefs; but here, as the Repentance importedisfomething more than ordinary, as the expreflìons intimate, fo the good , that Chrift is here faid to be fens to do unto them, isfomethingmore than ordinary, to wit, Comfort & joy in an high meafure, which is more than meer Pardon , or Julìifcation ; fo- me pardoned & jultified may (land in need hereof, being indeed mourners in ashes, & under a fpirit of heavinets, notwithflanding of their being in a juffified fiate. So that this place cometh not home to the point now in gaeftion. Obj, 9. Is not this to favoure the Antinornians , who fay, that Repentance is needlefs , and is a meer legal duty, neither to be urged , nor praEtifed un- der the Gofpel. Anf. Though we fay , that Repentance bath not the fame Place, Office & Intereft in & about Juflification & Remilfiön of fins, that Faith hath; Yet we give no countenance unto the Antino, nianerrour, be- caufe we afirme Repentance to be neceffary , in all loch as are Juttified, and the real beginnings of Gofpel Repentance to be alto neceffary , unto fuch as are to be juftified , 1 fay the beginnings, becaufe I conceive, the principal partsor workings of faxing & Gofpel- Repentance follow faith, and upon Faith
