{ C H A P. 29. Repentance no condition of 31uffi fication. 373 Faith in Chrift is the union betwixt Chrift & the Beleever made , and the man brought into a juftified fiate. Seing then we prefle & urge the exerci fe of Repentance as a confiant duty, & require it in all fuch , as would enjoy Peace & Comfort here , & be faved here -after , we yeeld nothing unto the,Antinomians. And againft them we urge the fame Scriptures , that ha- ve now been alledged, & others alto, as irrefragable proofs of the necefíity of this grace , though to other ends , than to be jufttfied thereby in fuch manner , as we are laid to be Juftified by Faith. Okj. io. Do not our Divines ordinarily fay & prove , that Faith & Re- pentance are Conditions of the Covenant of Grace. I Anf. True, but their meaning is not , that Repentance is the fame way a Condition of Juttifica- tion, that faith is ; but that terme , Conditions of the Covenant they take lar- gely , to wit, to fignifie & import the duties required of fuch , as are within the Covenant of Grace ; & not {trickly , for Conditions of entering into Covenant; Thefe two are carefully to bediftinguished : many things may be called the Conditions of marriage, that is , duties of married perfons to other , that can not he called Conditions of making up the marriage Re- lation , as is manifeft ; & fo is it here. Many duties are required of Belee- vers , that neither are , nor can be called Conditions of Ju{tification , or of entering into Covenant with God. Obj. H. But do not many both in fermons & in writtings, even when fpeaking of Pardon & of justification, joyn Repentance with faith ? Anf, It may be fo; but their meaning is not , I conceive , to give an equal share of Intereft, Power & Office in & about justification , unto Repentance , with that, which they acknowledge Faith to have , but either their purpo- fe is, hereby to show the infeperable connexion , that is betwixt faith & Re- pentance, or to show, that they fpeak of that faith, which is attended with this neceffary Grace of Repentance, & doth effectually work the fa- me; or both rather : So that their true meaning is, to give the due privilege & intereft unto that faith , which can prove it felf to be real & true juftifying faith , by etfeCtuating Repentance , never to be repented of; and thus they withal! fatisfie an Objection, or que {tíon, that might be made, if they had mentioned faith alone ; for it might be enquired , How shall we know , whether our faith be of the right kind , or not ? Now their joining of Re pentance with faith , doth shortly anfwere this queflion ; Repentance being a concomitant and a fruit of true faith , & more fenfiblie felt , & obvious to their perception, might be to them avive & perceptible expreflion oftruc & juftifyingfaith. Obj. 12. But feing faith by Come is called , that which doth morally qualifie the fu6jea to be a fit patient so be juflified; why may not Repentance have an equal share in this moral Qualification, with Faith ? I /Inf. If we should make faith to have no other I ntereft in justification, than Repentance hath, or may be yeelded to have , we may eafily grant , that Repentance hath the fame & equal! Intereft with faith : but it is denied , that faith bath no other lntereft , but is chat, which doth morally qualifie &c. drienefs in wood may qualifie it for the fire , & yet the wood may be long fo , before it become Zz z the
