O thers , who diftinguish betwixt Faith & Evangelick Obedience , as betwixt content toa mans Soveraignity, &obeying him , as Soveraigne, as doth Mr. Baxter Confefj. p. S9, 9o. Yet fay, that'Love is comprized in Faith , and is force degree of Juflitying Faith & not properly a fruite of it ; becaufe the' wills apprehenfion of a thing good, or carnet willing & accepting it , is the' fame with Love ; fo is the wills Contenting , Electing & accepting; & all this being inFaith,Love muff be comprehended in ituYea they fay,that as Lo- ve & Faith arepropounded in the Gofpel, asofthe fame neceflìty,fo they are neceffary in Juflification, & concurrent in apprehending Chrift. So fpoke Mr., Baxter in his Aphorifiner. And in his Confefj; p.34,3 5. he faith. Though Charitie, as it refpefleth other .bje ir, is no part offaith, yet arit refpeíleth an offe red Saviour, it it as much a fential to faith, to receivoChrifi with Love , as it is e f fential to a Sa- viour ( the objet of faith) to be good for us ; for good ar good is received by love.. Nor was it ever the Intent of the Holy Ghoß ; to take faith in Chriß , in fo, narrow a fente, as included, not Love to him, when it is Paving, Faith, that is J oken of. In reference to all which, we need fay but thofe few following things, r. Tl1e Scriptures do plainly enough diftinguish betwixt Faith & Love, They are reckoned as diftind fruits of the Spirit Gal. S: 22. Love , joy - fault yea Faith is faid to worke by love Gal. S: 6. we heare of the work of faith , and labour of love i.Thef. i :3. we heareof Cbaritieoutofa pure heart, &offaitb uufaigned. i. Tim. is 5, And the graceefourLord ( faith Paul i.Tim. t: 14.)' was exceeding abundant , with Faith (L' Love', which is in Cbriß jefus..We hear of the bri^llplate of Faith & Love. i.Tbef. 5: 8. 2. The Scriptures do plainly tell us , that we are Juflified by Faith ,, as we heard , but never faith, that we are juflified by love : And Pure as it isbeft forus,. to regulate our exprefïions, according to the Lord's Revela- tion of this myfterie ; fo it cannot but be offenfive to ufe fuch expreffions , as not only are not fcriptural , but alto feem inconfrflent with Scriptural ex- preffions : when the Scripture faith exprefly & frequently , 'that we are Ju flified by faith, and that in.oppofition to works, and not only faith.it, but proveth it, it cannot be juflifiablein us to fay, That we are ¡unified by Lo- ve; féing that would at lean feem to crof'e the Apoflle's afl'ertion , the for- ce whereof is (as ours abundantly evince againft the Papißs) that we are Juftified only by Faith, & confequently by no other grace neither by Lo- ve, nor by Hope , norby Patience, &c. 3. By the Scriptures telling us, that we are luftified by Faith , & never faying, that we are Junified by any -other grace, as by Love &c. we are given to underftand, that ,Faith hath other Operations, Ufes & Ends, la- the office of juflification , than Love, or any other grace bath : And there- fore to infinuate, that love bath the fame interet & Office in -& about juflifi -- cation,that Faith bath , is to deny,or overturn the proper & fpecifick actings of Faith , in order to juftification Y' And , how fmall a matter foever this may appear to be at firft ; yet, when it is further profecuted ,,. orthe ground.
