176. Love etc. not Conditions of tuflification. C A a P. 30. of this fearched into or its defigne & tendency confidered impartially , it will befound of a deeper confequence , & to tend to the alteratiouof the whole fpecifick nature of the Covenant of Grace , as it is diftinét from the Covenant of Works : for though both Faith & Love may & muff be loo- ked upon , as aéting upon the fameobje& Chrift ; yet when Faith is concei- ved as acting no other way , than Love , and both , as pote( }avive Condi- tions, or as parts of one Poteftarive Condition, and no other way ; it is plaine enough , how the fpecial atings of faith , in compliance with the defì4ne of God's Wifdom , Grace, -and Love in the Gofpel contrivance, and thereupon in receiving & refting upon Chrift, as the alone ;propitiating Sacrifice, and on his Surety-Righteoufnefs , as that alone , by verrue of which they are to expect Jollification & Acceptance with God , & to recei- ve the Atonement, are laid afide : And the beleeving foul is fuppofed not to a& on Chrifl , nor apply Him & hisaRighteoufnefs in order to the being Acquit from the fentence of the Law, & from the Curie, due for the breach of the fame, in that particular manner , that both its cafe & condition requireth , and the Gofpel pointeth forth , and the experience' of foul , at- taiuirg hereby to Peace , doth confirme. 4.. It is true, there is Love to ChriU in the foul , that beleeveth , and it muff be fo ; and it is true alfo, that this Love is called for in the Gofpel; bat hence it will not follow,, that Love is the Condition of Jetlification etr that every thing , that is prefent with , or accompanieth faith in .tu(lica- tion , hath the fame Ufe, Ends, and Intereft in Juflification, or the fame In- fluence thereupon , that faith bath ; far lofs will it follow , that that which followeth faith , and whereby faith worketh through all the after- carriage of a Beleever, hath the fame Place , Power and Interett in & about juflifioa- tion , that faith bath -, as we shewed above of Repentance. 5. If by this Love nothing elfe were meaned , but that Love of defrre, that neceffarily ac ompanieththefouls accepting, and clofeing with what is good or offered as good; fore, it would have given no ground of offen- ce to have called it fo , & would have been more acceptable, than to have called it otherwayes, even though fpeaking (trickly , the Love of defire' Uncle be called Love, and is a `Love, in its own 2 and therefore, I judge, that denomination might have been rather chofen, which would have given no offence, than the other, which to avoide fufpicion and offen- ce , calleth for fo much walk of words , to render the exprefïìon lefs . no- xious, efpecially , Icing for all that is Paid, in clearing of the fame, all ground of fufpicion is not removed, but that force other thing was intended , than that meer Love of defrre , that is infeparable frofnthe will's earneft purfui- te after, or embraceing any good thing offered; efpeciafly when it is faid, That ¡oh. i6: 27. & 14: 2.I make Love the antecedent Condition of God's Love & Chrift's Love to the perfon.
