C H A P. 30. Love .&c. not Conditions of Juffiftcation. 377 it is jóh. 16: 26- becaufe ye have loved me d?' have beleeved that I am come out from God) is made as formal & full a Condition of Reconciliation & Pardon, & confequently of juftification as faith is; Yea & that both faith & Love are made Conditions procuring God's Pardon & Reconciliation. Thus fpea- keth Mr. Baxter agamft Mr, Cartwright pag. oz. But left any should think, that either of theft places cited should prove, whatMr.Baxter alledgeth them for, it would be cónfidered. (i) That ¡oh. 14: 21. He is fpeaking of fuch as are already belcevers & juftified , when he is fpeaking offuch as have alrea- dy Chrift's comtnandemants , & keep them. (2) He fpeaketh ofthe Fa- thers & of his own Love of fuch , in the future time , which cannot be mea- ned in reference to his Difciples, unlefs we think , they were not yet jufti- fied, contrary to the very forgoeing verfe , & many other paffages in that difcourfe, particularly Chap. 14: 1. & 15: 3, 4, 5, 9. (3) This is meaned ofa Love of Manifeftation ; as Chrifi's own words added exegetically declare. And I will Lovehim & will manifefl my felfto him. (4) This fannc fort of ex- prefïìon of Love is alto to be undertlood fch, i 6. as the whole fcope cleareth, this being fpoken to perfwade them that they should receive the returne of their prayers & should not ask the Father in vaine; for fuch a Love carrieth he towards you (as if he had laid ) that , in a manner I need not intercede for you. (ç) And fo the Love of the difciples here mentioned , is that Love of complacencie, which they had in Chrift in abiding Rill in his Company , and delighting in him , whom they had followed as theirMafter , all along.; and the caufe from whence this flowed, is added , and have beleeved , that I came out from God. As to the fecond particular , to wit. Purpofe of obedience. M. Baxter in his Aphorifines told us , that as the accepting of Chrifl for Lord ( which is the hearts ( Subjeftion ) is as ejJential a part of iiißlifying faith , of the accepting him for Saviour : So confequently , fincere obedience ( which is the e f ea of the former ) bath ás much to do in juflifying us before God , as. ( fame) Affiance , which is the fruit ofthe latter. Hereby he would feem to give the fame lntereft unto adual Obedience, in Juftification that he giveth unto Affiance, which cannot be a anting unto Juftifying Faith , yea himfelfconfefeth to be an cffential aft of Faith , in the margine of thefe words , Printed with Mr. Cartwright; Ob- fervations and his Reply pag. 2o4. But in his Confel.. (as we heard above ) p. 82, 90. he putteth as great a difference betwixt faith, & Evangelick Obe- dience , as betwixt the Content to Marriage Relation, and the conjugaltFi- delit,' & Obedience ofa wife to her husband : So that hereby it is manifelt I that with him, all Obedience cannot comprized in faith , & fo cannot be a Condition with Faith of jaftification : and this he faith pag. 90. exprefly. So thatl do no more (as I am,accufed) compriv all Obedience in Faith, becaufe I comprile a Love to the Redeemer , d? a Con feet to be governed by him , then I corn - prie all Conjugal Obedience Fidelity of a woman to her hushand, in the Mar- riage Covenant or Content becaufe I conpri ¡e in it Love to the Man ¿r a Covenant of fidelity l.fr obedience to the future; His meaning is not then, ,that aétual Obe- dience is either a part of faith , or hath the fame interelf ofa Còndition in justification', that faith bath. Therefore he tels us more plainly & potiti- vely
