78 , Love &c, net Conditions of 3f riffi fication, C 14 A P. 30., vely his meaning , as to this , Confel . pag. 3 2: 3 9. n. 22.This Covenant ( faith he, meaning the Covenant , that a Beleever entereth with Chriff, as a Sa- viour , and in him , with the offended majeftie ( contained) an engagement to future obedience : So that though our frfl faiA be not the fame thing with Obedien- ce to Chrift _ yet in taking Chrifi for King, it efenttally containeth a Refolution dq Covenant to obey him. Hereby we fee, that a Refolution,Promife, or Cove- nant to obey Chrift , for the future , is ethentially included in faith , as ju- ffifying , & confequently that this muff be as kindly a part of the Condition of Juffification as any thing in Faith. And next, that the ground of this is , becaufe jt , ifying faith , as jutfifying , doth as kindly & really take Chrift for a King , as for a Prie(f. This is further explained by what he faith immediatly before n. 2I. The very nature of this laving Faith , is to be a Heart- :Covenanting of a Sinner with Chriff , as a Saviour - Even as is a Covenant ofa woman to her husband, a Souldier to his Commander ; a Subjetf to his Prince , a S choller to his Mailer ; it is our becoming. his Difcipler. By which we fee thefe things laid down , as truthes to he reeved. I. That the fouls Covenanting with Chrift or accepting of him , as of- fered in the Gofpel , is like the Covenanting of a woman with her Husband, of a Souldier with his Commander, a Subje& to his Prince &c. z. That as the Woman , Souldierer Subje&, Refolve , Covenant & Pro- mile to performe obedience unto the Husband, Commander , or King , fo the Sinner, in Covenanting with Chrift , doth Refolve, Covenant and Promife to performe Obedience unto Him. 3. That therefore , this Refolution, Covenanting & Promifing to perfor- me obedience , beingefí'ential to Juffifying Fairh , is a formal Condition of Junification, & the meaning of faiths being the 'Condition of Iuflification muff be this; the Man's Refolution , Covenanting & Promifing to per forme Obedience, is the Condition of luffification ; or at leaf this part of faith, as well as others, is the Condition. 4. And the ground of this is, becaufe }Unifying faith , even as Iuflifying, -or in order to 'unification, aiteth as direEtly & exprefly on Chriff as a King, as on Chrift, as a Prieft. In Anfwere to which, I shall but briefly fay thefe things. I. The fimilitudes adduced halt in one thing, & that one thing, is all, as to our prefent bufinefs. A woman Covenanting with her husband, and thereby promi.fing obedience , or a Souldier with his Commander, or a Subjetf with his Prince, prefuppofe & acknowledge, Power & Strength in themfelves to performe the obedience promifed & upon the.Suppofition & ConviEfion of this power & ability in themfelves to performe what shall be commanded , they willingly & of their own accord, promi-fe to put forth that Power , Strength & Ability of theirs , unto the performance of obe- dience, that shall be required.. But it is not fo, in our cafe, The Sinner, who is now fuppofed to be-about Covenanting with Chrift , through the Spi- rit of ConviEtion , & Humiliation , is put far from all his natural Pelagian conceits & apprehenfions of himfelf, & of his own abilities He is now made to fee, that as he bath nothingatprefent, wherewith toSatisñe God, for
