CH 4, Fe 30. Love &c. not Conditions of yu£hiftcation. 3$r fróm the bondage & flavery of fin , bring us out of captivity, 84 from under the power of Satan , & workein us both to will & to do , according to his good pleafuce. Thefe are Acts of Chrin's kingly power, thefe are Bene& tes , that anfwere the prefent neceffity of wakened fouls : thefe therefore muff be the good things , their fouls muff leek after , & for thefe things mutt they goe to him , as King, & in reference to thefe muff they lay hold on Him : So that this is mainly irnplyed in their receiving of Chrrn, as King. In like manner, when they receive him , as a Prophet they do not come unto him , as other Scholers do to their Mailers, bringing a Capacitie , a Faculty & an Ingine with them for learning , without which all the Mailers paires in giving Inifruóions s & theirs in ffudying hard, will be in vaine : but they come unto him , in the through conviólion of their Blindnefs , Incapa- citie to learne , want of Ünderflanding to perceive the things of God , and to take up the myfleries of the Kingdom : that he may teach them, as never man taught , by giving them an hearing Bare , and an undernanding Heart, by opening their eyes, CO fee the myfleries of God & of Chrifl; that he may fo teach , as to write his lawesin their heart ; caufe their hearts to co- me to wifdome, & caufe them , to know the way, wherein'they should walk. It is true, the receiving of Chrift as King includeth alfo their obligation to owne him , as fuch , by receiving his Lawes , fubjeling unto his Difpenfa- tions, &c. And the receiving of him as Prophet , includeth their obliga tion to acknowledge him for their only Teacher and to depend on him for their Infiru?lion : But yet I fay , as this fpeaketh out no formal promífe or engagment to ablual Obedience & acftial learning, but rather an Engage ment & Refolution to be willing that he may a61 the part ofa Prophet & of a King towaÿÿk them , and fo caufe them carry & look like Scholers& Sub - je &s; fo the ing, that is firilly & mainely in their eye ,. in their coming to Chrif} , is that which fuiteth their prefent cafe, and aniwereth their prefent felt necefiity , & is an help to their prefent pinch. What Engagements may be laid upon them by thefe Relations ; or what Refolutions they may have, afterthey are renewed in the Spirit of their mindes , and united unto Chriff unto aólual obedience, in the power and ftrength of the Lord , is not to the prefent purpofè, while we are fpeaking of what the Soul doth, in order to ]unification. 5. Hence we fee , how groundlefs it is, to fay , that a Refolution to aElual obedienceisa Condition of junification : This we finde no where required in order to Junification This is no where called a Condition of 'unification. We are no where faid toboejuflified by this Refolution. This is incontinent with the frame of a poor^wakened foul, feeking 'unification. This would in part make the gift of Junification not free & of free grace, but to be of works or ofa Refolution for works; and fo would give ground (in part at lean ) of boafting & of glorying , contrare to the whole frame of the Gofpel. And fo this would lefen the difference betwixt the Old Covenant of works , and the New Covenant of Grace. Having thus difpatched the fecond particular, we come unto the Third ; to wit, to enquire, whether pe:feverance be a Condition of Junification? A a a 2 And t.
