C H A P. 31. Work of obedience no Condition of ytrffific ttion. 385 of the kindnefs , dT Love of God, mentioned verf 4. to the Gofpel, Iknow not. (2) And though the Gofpel were here underftood , that would not help the matter 3 for the Text faith that after this did appear , he faved them ( that is Jullifled in thefirftplace, as we fee serf. 7.) according to his mer- cy , &not byworlrsofRighteoufnefs. (3) Thefe works are called works of Righteoufnefs ; But no works of their own , before Converfion , can be fo called : can the works of fuch as are foolish , difobedient deceived , fer- ving diverte lulls & pleafures , living in malice & envie , hateful & hating one another , be called works of Righteoufnefs ? and yet fuch were chef , before the kindnefs & Love of God reached them , asverf. 3. showeth, le thinks the fame anfweremay be given to 2. Din. is 9. And fo we think, the fame reply may fuffice. His 2. ground is p. 14.4. That Paul , in fpeaking againfl 7uflifcation by works , giveth fufcient caution not to be underflood thereby to (peak againfl Evan- gelick obedience in the cafe. That is , not to (peak againit juttificationby Evan - gelick works ; which were to fay , he took much paines for nothing; for if hehad but Paid , that the Ceremonial Law was abrogate , he had fuflicient- ly confuted juflification by the Ceremonies if that had been all the Law he 'maned. But how proveth this man , what hehere alledgeth ? He addu- céth tom. 3: 3 I. But I wonder how did the Apoftle by hisdoftrine eflablish the Ceremonial Law ? In the Spìrìtsafit ( faith he ) in as much as in preaching 7ufiif cation in the Gofpel Way , he preached in plaine precepts , the neceffity of that fpiritual purity unto Salvation, which mar but darkly taught by the Çeremo- nialL.aw. AnJ. (I) Then this man fuppofeth, that heiseflablishing the Ceremonial Law , by his dodlrine in this book ; for he thinks, that therein he is preaching up Juflification in the Golpel way. (2) Neither did the Cere- monial Law more darkly , nor doth the Gofpel in more plaine termes preach the necetfity of fpiritual purity as the Condition of Juflification : So that this Author beggeth what he cannot prove. (3) But that this is the Moral Law , hath been frequently shown above; as alfo it bath been shown, how & what way it was eftablished, by the doctrine of juflification without works; fo that we need not regaird his laying ; that by the doarineof juíiifca- tion by faith , they efiablished the moral Lam , both in the letter 6' Spirit of it in teaching the nicety of Evangelical obedience to it , after a more fpiritual d?' forci- ble manner, than had been taught befare. For this faith nothing for their plea- ding for obedience to this Law , as a Condition of Juilification; which is the thing, he should have Paid : And if he know not, how' Juflification without the works of the moral Law can confrfl with neceffity of Obedien- ce to the Moral Law , upon Golpel grounds, he is ignorant of the Gof- pel , and hash been more educate in Socinus his School , than in the ortho- dox Church. He citeth to the fame purpofe IZorn. io: 4. & tels us , that Chri fl war the end of the Law in his. doürine , having taught that R,igbicoufne fr of living which the Law itfel f taught , but in a more excellent fpiritual efit`ual manner. Which is a very Socinian like glofs', but no way forting the words , nor the fcope of the Apoflle, as the very reading of them may evince, & the fol lowing
